Like anything, it falls on the parent to ensure their kids are setup for success. That does not include expecting everyone else to educate or parent them or giving them a trophy for shoing up or telling them they can be anything under the sun. Everyone cannot be a doctor or chemist or astronaut, etc.
Back in my day, middle school health class started teaching us that stuff. |

Cannot stress enough that the most important aspect of all this early ed is the 'if you are uncomfortable with ANYTHING that ANYBODY does, come tell us (parents), even if it is a teacher, minister, or our best friend' and add to it a big dose of 'nobody can ever get you in trouble with us' or some version that fits for you. It is pedophile-101 to use emotional blackmail with kids, making them think they will get in trouble if they don't go along, or telling them that it is what they are supposed to do.
As far as the state vs. home thing - relax, they aren't going to brainwash your kid out of the family values/faith. Think back to your own youth, and I bet you were easily able to distinguish between some BS coming from a teacher, and something that was really important to your parents. |

Every time I see this thread pop up, I think of Tom Hanks in the movie "Bachelor Party":
Friend: Are you thinking about having kids? Hanks: I want to adopt a 16 year old korean girl as soon as possible. |

I know what it's like to be confused. I was very naive as a kid, so I had absolutely no gaydar and it surprised the heck out of me when I found out many of my best friends in high school were gay. They thought it was funny that I was so clueless. I had never even considered the possibility that I might be gay, but I started wondering. Fortunately, one of my friends reassured me that "If you were, you'd know," so I didn't have to figure that out alone. The school might have something to teach your daughter that you can't... and I'm not just talking about the difference between THERE and their. |

if youre counting on the state to educate your kid about sex, youre doing it wrong.
probably the best time to do it is when they start showing interest in girls/boys outside of normal friends. Im always amazed at how early you see kids banging these days, so better to start early than later.

My first sex ed class was when my friend stole his dads Playboy and brought it to school. I was in grade 2 or 3.
Now with the internet, kids will be watching hardcore porn behind our backs well under 10 years old. I would start teaching them the basics and the outcomes as early as 7-8 years old. |
