Assuming they didn't need better microphones and faster CPUs and a dedicated listening processor (like Amazon Echo devices have), you pretty much answered your own question there.

There's zero incentive to provide such a niche feature for old cars. Very few people would care, and very few people would change their buying habits. BMW does provide infotainment updates you can flash yourself, but they generally don't add features, they just fix issues.

Regardless, the microphone array used in modern smart assistant devices are far better than what is in our cars. Cars have to be far better at noise rejection as well for obvious reasons. There's also the fact that there would have to be a low power system always listening for a trigger word. That simply does not exist on current iDrive systems. I'm fairly certain the CPU on iDrive 4 is probably fast enough for a smart assistant, but you never know. There might already be a ton of things running in the background and a smart assistant could slow things down considerably.

They didn't put the hardware into iDrive 4/5 etc.
