Agreed, I'd take the glorious noise of the flat six over the obnoxious exhaust on the F Type R every day of the week.
Don't get me wrong, the Jaguar sounds hilarious at first but starts to feel silly and antisocial really quickly. |

Recently cross shopped these cars: Ftype is a good looking pig. A pig in that for its size, its waaaaaay too heavy for someone like me who likes toss-able cars.
991.1 is a fantastic car, but a bit too GT for our tastes (my wife drives the sports cars too), so when all was said and done we ended up with a 981 GTS as its just such a playful mid engined sports car. The 991 was a bit sterile for back road driving: still stupid fast if pushed but lacked that feel if you like smaller cars compared to a 981. If the F type drove like a 981 we'd have a different discussion. If you driving is a bit more highway/high speed the 991 is likely a better ride since: GT car. If getting a 991 be sure you like the seats and it has a sports exhaust IMHO. Base seats are horrible for normal sized folks: fits wider people. The PSE is just a giggle fest when turned on. - b |

Yeah, I agree. I have the totally opposite opinion of which car makes me smile, but despite that I would say you should absolutely get the car that excites you

That’s a tough one. The 911 is just very good all around. The F Type maybe has a little more luxury, unpredictability and one of the best exhaust notes you’ll ever hear. I’ve never driven an R (have heard a number of them) but did drive a F Type S and almost bought it just because of how it sounded.

As someone who has driven several versions of both cars in question, I will say it's quite possibly one of the hardest between-two-cars decision one could have to make.
Now to answer the question. The 911 is clearly the superior car. It is more engaging, has a superior chassis along with steering, brakes, and handling. It's more precise, more communicative, and definitely the better of the two to wring out down a twisty backroad. If you have kids, the back seat could even be a big point. It will definitely be more reliable, and it will definitely hold it's value better, at least for the immediate future- 3-5ish years. That said, and something you pointed out, no 991 short of a GT car even begins to approach the charm and character of a V8 F Type. The engine is glorious, with Herculean power and a sound to wake the dead. I honestly think aside from lack of a back seat, it's no less practical, and no harder to daily drive. It's quite a comfortable car, and though visibility isn't as good as a 911, it's a very easily managed car in traffic and whatnot. Though the interior definitely leaves some to be desired, I think the dead sexy body it's wrapped up in makes up for it. Also, though it may have inferior driving dynamics, I think it's actually more fun on the street in and urban area because of the engine and power delivery. I personally adore the F Type, and like you said, I've never emerged from driving a V8 one without a huge grin plastered on my face. At the end of the day, unless the rear seats were a major factor, I don't think I could buy a 911 S over an F Type. Not a PDK car, anyway. If it were a perfectly spec'd manual, there might be more contest. My pick of F Types would honestly be an earlier RWD convertible though. Ultimately, you can't go wrong either way. Just enjoy whatever you end up buying every chance you get! |

The standard Carreras are definitely great cars but there's nothing special about them. You'll find yourself lusting after a GT car every time you see one and look to upgrade very soon. The F-Type is faster, looks better, sounds better, and will be more fun to drive around town. Comfort and practicality is a wash, but build quality and driving dynamics definitely favor the Porsche.

I love that this guy edited his post to remove "gt3".
Anyways, I'd go 911 over F-Type. F-Type may be satisfying in the short term but I think you'll wish you went 911 if you're keeping it for more than 1-2 years. With that said, I'd try and stretch to see if you can get into a GTS. With the new 992 being unveiled prices may drop in the short-term enough to grab one. The 2016 GTS also has an NA and that car would be a keeper IMO.
