how about a 240i ? And yea most tracks wont allow a vert on.

Going through same thing I did 1.5 years ago. Had to be stick, min 6 or 8cyl (the 230 simply wasnt enough, although ONE R&T article is the bible to argue that ) , just too many Mustangs/Camaros/Challengers in my area. I'd probably go Stanf in NA, drove one, pretty nice ride and decent price. Hell you might be close on new Z coming out soon, probably $45K, if you can get one.

I haven't done a ton of work on my 235i, but not too tough to work on.

Good luck

I actually thought about a 240, that's definitely an option. Had one as a loaner once, it was fun... Still leaning E93 M3 because of the V8...

Part of the problem is that it's hard to test drive these. Used car dealers suck, and I don't want to waste private parties' time...

Mercedes has several potential options that might check your boxes: SL550, SLK55, E550, C63, etc.

if you can wait some time to get one, a lot more would fall in your range. used car prices are crazy right now.

Im in the same boat, looking for a fun weekend car. but everything that was 20k last year is 30k this year.

mustang is a hard beat for the price. z4 with the n54 engine are pretty fun as well and can be found cheap, and power is stupid cheap to make on those engines.

C5 Z06 with a square Z06 tire/wheel setup and a seat, steering wheel, and stereo swap. That's what I'm doing. Cheap, reliable, easy to mod, and HUGE performance value.

If you strike the track requirement, then R129 SL55 or SL63. Regardless, most "occasional HPDE" guys are really just doing parade laps for 20 minutes every couple hours, so for that the car will do just fine.

CarMax was littered with E93's last time I looked. I have no reservations thrashing a CarMax car.

Living in the city, an e93 m3 is going to feel slow compared to your X3M, especially with the 6MT. Still a great car, but you should definitely find one to drive before buying.

Why not build a kit car? You like to wrench it sounds like and this way you’d know the car inside and out. Plus side would be super light weight so a 4 banger would be more than enough to get it moving (there’s v8 kits out there as well) and it’d make for a good HPDE vehicle and a permanent convertible.

For example: I’m building a DF Goblin using a 2006 cobalt SS/SC donor and turbo swapping the LSJ. When done, I’m aiming for 400whp on pump gas in a vehicle that’s mid engine and weighing ~1500-1700lbs

Get a liter-class sport bike. Everything else will then seem slow to you.

Porsche Spyder or a 911 of some sort, Corvette C7/8, Mazda Miata, M2/135i, Fiat 500 Abarth. Maybe a Hellcat Widebody but those cars are huge.

As mentioned above, motorcycles are also awesome. Ducati has some great ones they aren’t as expensive as you might think.

Man!! I miss my sportbike days. Wheelie for days, LOL. I just can't imagine riding these days with all the fucking Douche Nozzles on their phones. Ever time you drive around it's just car after car swerving all over the place. You get next to them, texting away. FUCK THAT. So many times I wanted to grab anther bike, yet I just can't pull the trigger. Getting to be a pussy in my old age I guess.
