We skated harm free through Sandy but its something Ill never forget in my lifetime. The wind howling down the street like the grim reaper coming for its victim and the transformers going out one by one lighting up the sky in a green apocalypse.

My grandparents shore house got wiped out though, which I had hoped would be mine one day.

It was horrible. We did ok other than some roof shingles and power outages. I was only 3 blocks from the water but we have a park as a buffer. A few blocks over, the houses go right down to the water. They were told to evacuate but most didn’t. My SO had his police radio with him. I will never forget the frantic calls coming through as water rose. People went up to 2nd floor and the roof and were trapped. Power lines went down so the FD could get them out. One family was literally swept away as a wave went into their house and pulled them out. The husband and daughter died. The wife was found floating on some debris. Houses were reduced to rubble. All this in walking distance from my house.

I always said the only thing I want before I die is a house on the water. Sandy made me reconsider.

My DW, OCD psycho dog, and I were on Long Island for the weekend as Superstorm Sandy approached, putting on a two-day charity autocross event. I was sweating it out Sunday when the above picture was taken, because I had to tow the enclosed race car hauler off of Long Island, through NYC, and back home to the mountains with the limited truck routes as my only options. I figured that we would be stuck in traffic on the Lawn Guyland Expressway or Throgs Neck Bridge until they closed the roads, but surprisingly there was almost zero traffic and we were well inland in less than an hour.....

Thats terrible....

The white house shown was my grandparents (disregard the date stamp).

The infamous Seaside Heights boardwalk which is only a few miles from my granparents house

The house up to its roof was where my parents go fishing up in upstate NY

What a mess... It was weird how some places got hit bad and others went unscathed. My friends have a house in Ocean City NJ, right off the beach, and they thought the worst. They had no damage whatsoever.

Back to happy pics....this was the day we became Floridians. July 8th, 2015
Unfortunately, Lucy is no longer with us. She made it to 14 and had 2 wonderful years here chasing lizards and lounging by the pool.

In spring of 1999 I quit sailing lessons at the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. I was terrified of sharks in lake Pontchartrain (I was just a child). I begged my mother for a horse instead of a sailboat. She leased “Blackie” for me in 1999 since every young girl wants a horse and it’s a significant financial commitment. Three years later, Blackie’s owner put her up for sale. I was DEVASTATED, cried and cried. Then this arrived in the mail at my Grandma’s house.
