Dell
re: Dude, get a Dell.
I have had both a Dell desktop and a laptop, and got good results. I also had a good interaction with the product support dept regarding setup and a battery question. This was several years ago, however, and sometimes as companies grow, their service starts to suck, particularly during growth spurts, until the departments are proportional. I know this was a real problem with Gateway when it first got big. I haven't heard much about Dell lately, but have know several people who didn't like their Axims. (should I say Axima?) Now computer buying is so different...I just walk into Sam's Club and put an HP on the dolly. |

An update: They found my computer and it's awesome. I called Dell to cancel the shipment of a new one.
As far as Dell's, I had my last Dell with no problems at all for 6 years and it is still not all too bad of a computer, I just couldn't play any new games, which is understandable. I've never had a problem with their support, but I've never had to use it really. I could have made my own computer but it takes a lot more time, effort, research, and sometimes things just don't work together and if they don't then you're screwed. My boyfriend built his own computer about 6 years ago and he still has it. It cost a few hundred less than my Dell I got 6 years ago but over that period he has upgraded several things and had a few problems with it. I feel much better getting everything in a package even if it means paying maybe $300 extra, just my preference.

I think UPS are alright, used them at my previous business along with Fedex, DHL, USPS, and several other freight forwarder (daylight...etc). UPS was easy to deal with and they rarely try to jip you (as oppose to fedex). But that might all depend on the relationship you had with them as we had a good rep at our business that helped us out a lot and gave us good rates.
As far as dell goes, I hate them. My last laptop had to get a new battery after 2 months, new power cord after 6 months, new DVD rom after 7 months. Eventhough they were all covered by warranty, but the downtime and the trouble I had to go through was just not worth it. The stuff that wasn't covered under the warranty were the real hassle. The laptop constantly overheats, I went through 3 different types of cooling pads. It's very loud, I couldn't sleep if I left it on. Just a couple months ago, the LCD monitor just went dim and I couldn't fix it even after changing the entire LCD screen. Finally I just gave it to my sister to use as a backup and I went out and bought a VAIO.

I had a Dell computer about 10 years ago, and my wife (dating at the time) bought one about 8 years ago and I never had a problem with Dell not honoring thier warranty. In fact, a tech instructed me to flash the BIOS causing the motherboard to go out and Dell sent me a new motherboard on a 6 year old computer (warranty had expired after about 2-3 years)!
However, I can usually build a computer with similar specs to a Dell (often better components) and save $3-400 in the process. So, I have been building my own since about 2000. However, if I ever buy a laptop I may look at Dell again (unless Gateway better for a laptop).

thats cool. my wife thinks i'm nutz to spend so much time on this forum. She'd rather be shopping!
i guess though, that if i drop thousands of bucks on mods, she has the right to shop. Even though this is HER car, she doesn't seem to think that 19" wheels constitute a birthday present. She tells me i don't care for it so it doesn't count. lol. i'll probably get euro xenons but again, she doesn't care. She only cares for the three little letters on the hood. Quote:
