i don't get it. maybe i'm from a rich area, but i don't see the HUGE deal in a kid driving a e90, i definitely don't see the deal in a TL. A fellow classmate was driving a 540i that was tricked out with Momo wheels (they were the sh*t in the late 90's), another guy got a brand new Acura NSX-T (that ran like 80k back then).
i think they are just insecure about their own money so want to piss on another's parade. If they worked hard to afford a TL (or bemer for that matter), kudos to them, but just because they got the short end of the stick in life, they shouldn't complain about others. Quote:

I think most kids are dumb with their first car and shouldn't get a brand new car when they are 16. I'm a firm believer in the hand mom or dad's car down to you. That is what happened with me. I got my stupid "I just got my license and suck at driving" mentality out. I'm 21 now and have had my 325 since December. I know I'm really lucky to get a BMW as a graduation gift and I thank my grandmother every time I talk to her for the car. I think it is really a better idea to give a hand me down so that the 16 year olds can demonstrate they can drive correctly and coherently. So they don't make stupid mistakes. I know I acted stupid when I had my car, doing hand brake turns in a Land Rover because everyone else was doing it, but I learned such things are dumb and dangerous. Before you hand over a $30k+ car the kid should be somewhat mature. I think the kids who post, "oh my mommy and daddy will buy me whatever I want now that I'm 16, what should I get" they should be flamed if they act like dumbasses. But if they don't act like that then don't flame them. I guess some of those kids don't understand that they are dealing with mostly adults on these boards, so if you act like that of course you will get flamed.
Now I've noticed on this board you all are much more civil when it comes to young drivers compared to other forums. I guess that the BMW people seem to have a bit more class. Anyway, my sister has a TL, loves my car way more then hers. So I think the BMW is better |

cant fully blame the kids either, blame their parents too...its the parents who decided to spoil their kids...whatever it is i believe parents just want the best for their children unfortunately sometimes they dont realize they're spoiling their kids at the same time too
just my thoughts

Some kids are mature enough to drive a 40K car at the age of 16 though. It all depends on the kid and how he has been brought up. I agree with aapriadi, if you have to blame anyone (if its even necessary to blame in the first place is debateable), blame the parents.

I got my 328is as a gift when I was 18, does that mean I'm spoiled? Hell I actually wanted a jeep wrangler, my dad surprised with the BMW....

Car
It's not the fault of the kid, anyway. They can't help it if their parent gives 'em a car.
If I were rich enough to give my kid a car (assuming that they have a college and graduate school fund, etc) I'd probably at least make them work for it, and the insurance/maintenance costs. They would need to hold down a job and I'd give them "matching" funds...so maybe they get a few dollars from me for every buck they make. That way they're still earning it, in some sense, and have an idea (hopefully) of the effort/time needed to gain something. Kids who get the car and disrespect it are pretty quick to get slammed in this forum, and rightfully so. Kids who get the car and imagine that they actually earned it from their Blockbuster pay after taxes, (like AJ) need to sit down and do some math. Even then, they need to realize that living at home and having school paid for is what is allowing them to drive their car. Kids who actually make enough money for the car (LeBron)...well, enjoy your car. |

My school is mostly affluent and I see the same thing. Friends have Mustang GT, S4, Range Rover Sport, TL type S, 328xi, fair number of older Audi/MB/BMW "hand me downs" and lots of new Mazda/Ford/Honda 20k ish cars. There are still people driving really cheap cars too. Expensive cars aren't really a big deal, but still nice.

Read what the link contains. Do people think that kids owning nice cars like this helps them? Now this is just a guess, but a guess with experience...if that kid gets either of those cars - his car and maybe himself might be in trouble. Read some of the responses....kids are brutal these days.

If I had a kid...especially a boy...who wanted a car...i'd probably get him a beater first (and something with less than 130hp) and actually pay for him to attend some advanced defence driving classes instead...
only once he's driven for 3-5 years and has demonstrated he won't do dumb crap...then i'd think about getting him something newer with more horsepower... |
