it all depends what type of system he has. alot of the replacement of parts is a safety measure more than anything. the thing of it is you never know what is really messed up, or what is just messed up a bit and will show up at a later date. |

I stopped a girl in an old accord from doing that once...
Diesel just wont explode in a gasoline engine, once its sucked out and the fuel system taken care of the car should run again just fine. I did this to my snowblower a few months ago, accidently mixed up the Diesel I have from my Sailboat with the Gasoline tank, Just had to drain the fuel and blow out the lines and use a little starter fluid and it started right up... Funny thing though is a Diesel will run (not well it knocks like crazy) on conventional Gasoline Sucks to be in that situation though, Good luck to the guy, and Nice of you to be turn around for him |

What!!? That reminds me of a story when my dad filled up the window wiper fluid in the 745i with my RC Nitro gas. Apparently the nitro gas container looked just like the window fluid container. Both blue color fluids. He didn't notice until after he filled it up. lol. He ended up taking the bmw to the dealership to pump out the nitro fuel. hah. funny, eh.

darn... if the engine didnt fire up, perhaps there wasnt much engine damage. maybe they just need to flush the fuel lines and the cylinders and fuel tank.

He did make it to the exit (100 ft) so I guess it used the rest of the gas that was in the system and then it just stopped.

Most USA stations selling ULSD diesel for cars have the same narrow nozzles that were originally used to fuel cars designed for unleaded fuel and keep them from being fed leaded fuels by mistake. The reason for this is it was only in the last few years that ULSD became a requirement. Prior to that the standard USA #2 diesel had as much as 15000 ppm of sulphur in it. The narrow nozzles served the same purpose. They were intended to keep cars from being refueled with fuel from a truck stop. Our high sulphur content was the main reason most European diesels were never certified for sale here in the states. The sulphur combined with aggressive EGR use in smog controlled diesels resulted in plugged intake manifolds from the soot caused by the sulphur in as little as 18k miles in the average VW TDi diesel. Early VW's had full sized fillers allowing the owner to use truck stop fuel. This was needed at the time because there were a lot fewer stations selling diesel when the first TDi diesels hit the road. The big reason to stay away from truck stop fuel was that the larger fuel filler nozzles at the truck stops allow a much higher flow rate and the pumps are designed so a trucker can fill those hundred gallon plus tanks in the same time it takes to fuel a car with a 20 gallon tank. I could fill my empty VW in around 20 seconds if I was careful. Some truck stops have dual pumps linked together on both sides of the fueling lane allowing the driver to fill the tanks on both sides of his rig at the same time.

when you drive a diesel car already you are always careful to pick the right pump, at least in my case. I think petrol drivers pay less attention to this (i know i used not to).
I'd want to call the guy a dumbass and rip into it but actually i also feel bad since this can happen to anyone. Sucks, but the care WILL BE FINE, just pricey to fix, pump out the fuel, etc. But it won't be ruined. We have companies here that specialize in this kind of service. no that big of a deal, just pays $$$ for labour.
