did he finally change his mind to run aftermarket engine management? last i heard he was going to try to make those numbers with stock ecu and an off the shelf tune...honestly you'd be better off spending the extra money on a new ECU system

oil cooler found its new home:

3" charge pipe fits!! Hydraulic timing chain tensioner clears the collector perfectly:

Shawn modified intake manifold to better fit the car and placement of the throttle body now that the rest of the pieces are in place:

Shawn borrowed a set of injectors from another project here at the shop to see how the fuel rail was going to sit and of course found another obstacle:

...and some more progress on the little stuff...

Coilpack harness rewired to exit at the rear of the loom:

bungs anyone?

downpipe wrapped with DEI "Titanium Wrap," which is really just made of woven fibrous lava rock believe it or not:

02 sensors (wideband for tuning, and wideband for in car display:

getting closer:

he is sticking with the stock ECU, though he is not going to be running an off-the-shelf tune. to be more specific, he has sent his ECU to Nick G. of Technique Tuning, who is going to program it the same way he programs the OEM ECU on all the stage 3 kits TT installs (i'm pretty sure that's accurate, but Brian will get in here soon and clear it up if it isn't)...at which point Nick will send the ECU back and we'll install it. at any rate, this off-the-shelf tune, or "stage 3" map, is only to get the car started and drivable so Brian can drive it back over to Nick G. and get a true custom tune (albeit on the OEM ECU).

at the current power goal, the OEM ECU and Nick G's tuning skills are more than enough to make it happen...in fact, Brian will still have some headroom to push higher if he wants, but at that point, no amount or skill level of tuning can protect the internals...which is OK, b/c Brian is eventually looking to break the boosted stock block/head S52 power record. and when you're going for those kinds of records, an engine rebuild is always just on the horizon. but that is more or less why we decided against SEM - the price to performance ratio just didn't warrant it, especially when a tuning professional has been able to make it happen with the stock ECU reliably.

I love seeing someone who isn't scared to custom fab something up. It's nice to be different sometimes.

I'm not sure if it's an optical illusion or not but that wastegate looks extremely close to the radiator in a few of those pics. Are you guys going to use a different radiator? I'd worry about both the engine moving around under load and the heat melting an end tank while sitting still.

thanks for all the compliments and the showing of interest. Brian and Shawn will be thrilled to see it when they finally get on here.

i'm just Brian's brother. the fabricator is our good friend Shawn Grawunde of Fifteen52 (1552v2.com).

stock S52B32 block and head. Brian will eventually be gunning for the boosted stock block S52 record, so he'll be pushing the limits of the motor. it'll only be a matter of time before he bends or throws a rod, and when that happens, its rebuild time .

for tuning we'll be using the stock ECU (no standalone). however, it will be custom tuned by Nick G. of Technique Tuning.

you're right, it is very close to the radiator. however, if you think about the way the S52 moves (or more appropriately rotates) under load, you note that the manifold, turbo, wastegate, and everything else attached to the motor will rotate in the same direction - and that rotation is about the longitudinal axis of the car. thus the wastgate will not move toward or away from the backside of the radiator - rather it will rotate within a plane parallel to the plane that is the backside of the radiator. i have yet to post pics, but you'll soon see the custom radiator shroud Shawn made, and how its fits nicely around the wastegate.

the advice about under-hood temps is duly noted, as there have been instances with boosted e36 M3s where under-hood temps have been a problem for the plastic end tanks of the OEM radiator. and so its something we're going to keep a close eye on.
