Wife drives an '09 TDi sportwagen and it's great. She wanted an SUV for the size/space and didn't think the VW would be big enough. She soon realized how much room it does have.

Car has great passing power for what it is. We get an average of 37 mpg, about 50/50 city/highway. I'm 6'6" and fit it in reasonably well... Much better than her old Acura. The fit really isn't a replacement for an suv... Here's an article c&d did that's pretty interesting:

TDI. Aesthetically i'd go for the Fit. But for what you're looking for, i'd say it has to be the SportWagon TDI

I would go for the Jetta, but look for a lightly used '09 instead of the "new" 2010.

While the Golf and GTI are built on the Mark VI platform, the Jetta is just a face-lift with some interior pretty bits. All the bits you can't see are absolutely identical to the '09, so you're paying a premium for some very superficial changes.

It drives me crazy that most motoring journalists have not really highlighted this situation. I guess most people wouldn't notice anyway, but it's a bit disingenuous of VW to claim the JSW is as new as the Golf and GTI.

TDI ftw.

Although I personally went with the 2.0T SEL when it came down to decision time. Some features weren't offered in the TDI that were offered in the 2.0T SEL. Leather, homelink, power mem driver seat, 17's standard along with a few other tid bits. Only thing you can't get the pissed me off about the JSW's.... xenons. They should be offering those as at least options on all cars by now and maybe an AWD option would have been nice. If you ask my wife what she misses the most from the BMW.... power passenger seat...women

Anyways, I'm about to hit 10k and haven't had a problem yet. Fit and finish is near my retired e90. I have no issues with VW so far. I also cross shopped the fit. Way too small and no fun to drive IMO.

Fit since it's cheaper.

TDI all the way. My sister has one and she loves it. She and my brother-in-law compete for the best mileage on long trips and have gotten 65 mpg on a tank.

TDI
more power, having a turbo at altitude is a plus. its easy to chip and make even
more power. fit and finish will be nicer. ridiculous gas mileage. dsg. resale value.
the tdi cup looks nice. the VW community is awesome. if your a diy guy you can
actually work on your car as they sell many vw specific tools including a code
scanner that actually works.
