No contest here, and this is coming from someone who grew up with Volvos. Don't forget that the S60 is inherently a FWD. The Haldex AWD is also quite heavy. Go BMW in this case. Also the S60 platform is from 2001 and is not nearly as stiff as the E90/2. I used to have a 850 turbo and quite like the 5 cyl, but it is not nearly as smooth as the BMW 6 cyl.

Well i have just sold my S60R 2004 i have had it since new Feb 04 Great car and i tried to order a new 06 but in Australia Volvo has decided not to import any R's. So i looked at alternatives Audi S4, only Auto available, heavy fuel consumption and well overpriced. In Aus $170,000 on road
I pick up a 335 end of this month, hope I'm not disappointed. However, the Volvo i have no doubts will be a better allround car. In areas of seats, drivability in wet and slush, fuel consumption is fantastic for such performance, ambience of cabin and more space So in my case the 335 was second on my list. |

I would probably choose a BMW 325i over the Volvo S60R. This is coming from the owner of a BMW 330i and a Volvo S60 2.4T. Don't get me wrong, Volvo makes very nice cars, but the focus is more about comfort and safety. My wife loves her Volvo, but admits that she will probably go for a BMW next time (despite the drop in ride comfort that will accompany such a switch).

Id rather drive the volvo. I am so OCD about keeping my BMW clean and in pristine condition.
I would not give a crap about the volvo, wash it twice a year, not care about minor scratches... My life would be easier... |

Comparsion btw S60R AND 335I both 6 speed
Having now picked up my 335i i can give you my initial thoughts on both.
I was expecting seats to be inferior to the Volvo having driven 330i's but that it is not the case, very line ball.Ride is smoother and gearbox less notchy than Volvos. Seat of pants tells me 335i is quicker by a good margin. However, In the wet the Volvo would trounce the 335i. Remember the S60r design is a lot older than the 335i but still gives a good account for itself. 330i could not get close to a 6 speed S60r. The advanced setting on the Volvo is a great thrill but do not hit any potholes as you could bite your tongue with the jaring. Only for perfect roads or track. The 335i is not yet a week old but if it is as reliable as the Volvo i will be happy. |

I have a 335 coupe, and drove s60r. As a matter of fact s60r was one of my favourite before 335 came out. Interrms of engine performance i thought he cars are not too far apart.
S60R, on a roll is not as quick as the 335, i guess because of weight and awd. Thats why on a quarter mile it runs 14s to high 13s. However at 110, 120, volvo still pulls harder. Thats what amazed me the most about it. Interms of handling, in the dry I give 335 the edge. 335 is more flickable, and stable. However volvo also gives the feeling of you have been driving this car for years. |

Have now completed 3600 klms in the 335i manual Coupe and additional comparsions to the s60R (completed 60,000 lklms on sale) are:
Fuel consumption with mixture of city/country driving is slightly better on the Volvo and 6th gear will pull at lower speeds than the 335i, i find myself dropping to 5th more often (this is not a problem just an observation). The Volvo had a well known skip or hop when a bump is encountered on a corner very noticable at speed; guess what the 335i reacts the same. Violent enough to wake the wife but does recover quickly(Both the wife and the car). I do find the BMW is an easier car to drive and would not swap for a new s60r. A combination of better driving position, placement of the gear leverand less notchy and great turning circle make driving a pleasure not to mention that great exhaust note. Just a note, i returned from 8 days away and had the car loaded with Christmas presents, food , bags you name it ,back seats lowered flat and behind my seat was a plastic container. There must have been pressure on the seat backing as there is an indentation, i hope it returns to normal after awhile. |
