+1. I don't know about you guys, but my 22 mile drive to school every day is awesome. It's usually a 30 minute drive, but sometimes, on the way back it's 1 hour + with traffic. It's still a fun drive though.

1 hour each way is definitely doable. I have an hour commute every day, sometimes upward of 2 hours depending on if I need to visit any clients. It is draining to drive over 2 hours every day but many people do it day after day year after year.

*shrug* is the juice worth the squeeze? Growth potential vs current job?

I commute 85 miles round-trip. Some days are better than others. . . with traffic. For the most part it is not too bad. Just make sure you love the job.

An hour each way is pretty much my limit. It's not distance that gets to me, it's time. Especially time spent in traffic jams. I'd rather commute 100 miles each way on open roads than commute 10 miles in nightmarish gridlock.

agree, it is actually quite enjoyable if the road is wide open with the occasional 5-4-3 downshift and fly pass a couple cars using the fast lane.

I'm from Kansas City, a medium sized city where everyone's commute is relatively short. I remember my father would leave work around 4:45 from our house in the suburbs and beat all the traffic. Maybe this is what you should do. But back on topic, KC is nice because of it's size, we don't have a harsh and murderous rush hour, and our road system consists entirely of highways. Where I go to school now, I commute about 10-15 minutes each day, which is not bad at all, but there are no highways. So, if you commute is going to be about 1 hr each way on the highway, I'd say go for it.

My 18mi commute to work takes 30-45mins a day... 46mi in just over an hour in rush hour traffic is nothing. If you enjoy the job, take it.

I do. I tried the daily commute in a Lexus SUV. I lasted a month and a half before mental issues (extreme uncontrolled road rage) started to develop. At least in the M3, I can somewhat try fruitlessly to enjoy my commute, and my road rage symptoms are mostly gone.

Money saved in MPG just isn't worth the loss of sanity to me. And the auto, oh the auto. I just can't stand auto, traffic or not.

Stop and go is what I'd be dealing with. It is maddening. Clipping along at 70, then slamming on the brakes. Stop/go for a few, then up to 60. Slam on the brakes. Repeat.

I commute from upstairs to downstairs.

My longest was 20-30 minutes, that's pretty standard from the 'burbs to downtown in STL.

My "backroad" commute looks like this mostly. I take the backroads a lot. They suck when the corn is up because you have to stop at every intersection or you risk getting nailed broadside by a redneck in a pickup. But when the crops are in, you can fly. Sometimes I cover the 50 miles and see only one or two other vehicles.

^ Sweet. A few curves would be nice, but they're hard to come by in IL.

Do you have a clear bra on your car? Those roads look like they are full of small rocks, and debris.

No, I don't. I'd really need to cover the whole front half of the car and that gets ridiculously expensive. The really noticeable chips I've acquired are all further up the hood than most bras reach anyway. The very first chip I suffered was 8" up past the hood/nose split. I avoid the roads when they're freshly graveled, but I still get nailed by a stone every now and then. Even the highways are littered with stones because they fill holes and cracks with tar and pea stone and the first semi that hits the patch scatters the pea stone everywhere. This state sux when it comes to paving roads.

I commuted 75 miles each way for 2 years. (1 yr ago)
I did it in my little mazda, let me tell you, those were ROUGH years, but it got me to where I'm now. I miss my old job dearly and would move if I can.
Just be patient and pro-active and you'll be fine
