Audis success is attributed to it's parent company, VW taking over. As is Lamborghinis. Audis parent company has 10 extremely successful brands under it's belt including Audi, Bentely, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and Porsche (kinda).

If it was not for Volkswagens ownership, management, resources, and shared development, Audi would be in no position to counter BMW.

Are you suggesting getting over a product defect bump is a bigger obstacle than fighting a company owned by a parent which owns some of the most amazing and high profit yielding companies in the automotive business? Please sir, reassess your argument.

Even Ferrari does not stand on it's own, it's owned by Fiat. BMW however, has owned and made BMWs until they reintroduced Mini and licensed the Rolls Royce brand to make the Phantom.

BMW is the 14th largest car manufacturer in the world and stands on it's own. VW is the 3rd largest manufacturer in the world.

I'm sure you can appreciate how Audi being owned by the 3rd largest vehicle manufacturer in the world has an easier path set before it than does BMW as the 14th largest manufacturer. BMW has a strong product, but they also have one extremely difficult fight waiting for them.

And I believe in Transporter 2 and 3 he drove Audis.

Wasn't the first showing of the Audi R8 in a movie, iRobot (Will Smith)? I remember an Audi concept car that looked a lot like the R8.

Same here. I never understood how Audi thought it was 'clever' to depict a fascist police State bent on picking thru peoples garbage and grabbing them in their homes because they didn't recycle an orange peel. The entire commercial was rather disturbing.

Loved the original Transporter movie. Well, until his bimmer got blown up. The big old S-Class Merc just looked so bloated, like cellulite on a fat chicks thigh...

Ive always thought audi's 'marketing' is pretty dumb. Their commercials always strike me as something a high school kid would create. They always try to make fun of the companies they would love to be, but it always seems to backfire.

I particularly love the one poking fun at BMW for coming in second in a few comparison tests. I love it not because it's funny, but because it makes them look silly; BMW has won plenty over them in the past, won 3 over them right as those ads were hitting, and continues to win any one comparing the M3 over their lame rs5.

America is market that Audi seems to having trouble cracking, unlike the rest of the world and it's one area that BMW seem to hold all the cards. Will Audi try a new line of attack with it's advertising and if they do which way will BMW respond?

Will be interesting to watch future developments.

I find most of Audi's US television advertising annoying and tiresome. They convey a real inferiority complex because they can't seem to think of themselves except by trying to compare with someone else. BMW on the other hand, focuses on the inherent qualties of its cars. Now I think the 'Joy' campaign is rather weak, but I prefer a campaign that is aimed at people who want the performance experience (BMW) rather than one that is aimed at insecure badge whores (Audi).

my 2 cents:

ive noticed in ads/billboards/ etc that bmw is like the composed high school kid in a fight. Under control and very confident. On the other hand audi is all over the place n trying way way too hard.

audi has great mba's

package VW as nice looking and stylish...and their sales go up

audi has outdone everyone with TV/Movies...the R8 boosts sales of every model below it. Esp A4 and A3

BMW is fine though, when people test drive the two, they will note the difference.

Not to mention that the three comparison tests they talk about winning in those commercials compare outgoing BMW models to fresh re-designed Audi's...

Idiots...

I guess they are counting on most American's not doing their research before buying. Which, sadly, happens often...

Most people don't know what the BMW roundel stands for. But it doesn't matter for the general public, most average Joe just buy BMW for the prestige that stands behind the brand. I think Audi's are catching up, and doing it at a blazing speed. If you haven't noticed already(especially in your area), we're seeing more and more Audi's on the road. In fact, I can probably say I see more new Audi's than BMW's in the last year or so.

There doesn't seem to be much marketing effort for BMW in Canada.
