I would take the Porsche. Is the Carerra/ Carerra S models daily drivable like the M3? I was thinking of a C4S and drive it all year in Chicago. Thoughts?

My dad thinks anything over $600/month is too much for any car
Cause it's "just something to look at and get from point A to point B" I look at things differently than that.... And if you were implying that they would be paying, you would be wrong Driven the e93 M3 several times; fun to drive. More stable than my e93 335i ever was even with my suspension mods. Quote:
Only 2 cars I'd seriously consider that are NOT hard top verts are a Porsche C2 or a GTR (in this price range) A C63 as well depending on the price. I'm not a fan of the e90 at all for myself and an e92....also not a fan for the price.. would prefer the P car or GTR much more Quote:
PDK, improved interior, sexier exterior, engine build... along with the 2 years of warranty. Plus, a 06 C2 is about 56k on the market. this is the cheapest 997.2 anywhere I could find; all the others are 70k-ish And one reason I'm changing from the Z4 is because 1) I want to give it to my mom, but mainly 2) I do want something in the rear. My gf is 105lbs 5'2 so she can fit in the rear of a Porsche; there is no rear in a Cayman or Z4. Also... I would personally take a Boxster over a Cayman (I like verts, unless the performance is a lot better) E90/92 M3 is not an option; I don't even want one. Quote:
Car 2 is not a practical DD at all...Plus crazy up keep Car 3 is one of my top choices... but $8k is $8k. And their upkeep... If you go on nagtroc, you can find lower miles for less But they're not in SoCal Car 4 Don't want an old body... Car 5 I do not want manual. I had it on my old Porsche...my DD will never again be manual, ever.

You should test drive both. I highly doubt you would have made this thread if you had.

Very easy to daily. Great car. Ordered snow tires last week, so planning on taking it out throughout the winter.

I personally agree with him. I think paying anything over ~$500 for a lease is ridiculous. If its to own, than price doesn't matter because you can at least recoup costs.

Were I to buy a new e93 M3 (since we're comparing lease vs buy right now, I can't use a used car in the example as you can't lease a used car).. with a MSRP of 83k, let's bring it down to 77k after negotiations (1k over invoice), with tax, that's about 85k for the car. Now, as you can see from the CarMax ad, after 2 years and 10k miles, it depreciated 23k. Now, I drive more than 5k a year, I avg about 10-12k. So, let's say the car would be worth 59k in 2 years. That's a depreciation of 26k in 2 years time. Equaling to $1083/month cost. If I were to keep the car for 3 years, based on current 08 market values (I aim lower than higher, as you never what you will get), Let's say I can get 52k for the car. That's 33k in depreciation. 33k/36 month is about 916/month. But thing is... in 3 years, the M engine will be FI (from what I've read) and 'better' etc etc Meaning the car may depreciate even more. Considering I haven't even factored in the 2.9% finance fee...depreciation is pretty heavy when keeping a car for only about 3 years If I can get a lease payment below 916/month, then not only am I spending less money, but I don't have to go through the hassle of selling the car (I hate selling cars, it's a b*tch). I will either even out (more or less) or actually spend less money and time (and time does = money) to lease than to buy. This only works right now because the residual on the M3 is an amazing 67%. Were I to lease a new Porsche C2, with a MSRP of 85k (just a tad over the M3), payments are $1400/month (at least thats the deal they gave me) In this case, obviously financing the car would me more ideal (Porsche also hold better value) If I were planning on keeping a car for 4-5 years, or more, than financing it would be more logical. We cannot use buying cash because IMHO it's the biggest financial mistake one can do to buy a car cash (well, one of that value at least, a car for 20k or less is a different story). You can use that cash in real estate, stocks... enough to pay for the car. but again that's a different discussion all together. For $500/month, you can't really even get a 335i with a MSRP of 50k+ I would love input on this, as I love input on anything and everything

Car 6 I just think for a DD the m3 would be more practical and enjoyable. Plus too many Porsches around compared to e93 m3s

I agree. Personally I'd say go a couple years used, miss the huge depreciation hit, and purchase. But thats just my reasoning. Unless you plan on keeping it for a long time, not worth it and then leasings better.
I would never pay that much for a 335 lease. Just isn't worth it to me at least. Picked it up 2 years used with 7k on the clock for a nipple over 30K. |

I don't want an 08 though.. I hate the iDrive. You and I are more-or-less on the same page it seems 7k miles and $30k is a great deal; the ones I've seen in that price range have 20k miles at least. I originally bought my 335i last year because the lease payment was $750/month... I said no way. So I financed it. It got lemoned but that's a different story..i didn't expect it to lemon when I bought it lol

I think we're on the same page. My father picked up a 10'. The I drive is sweet. Not to mention this was over a year ago that I picked up my car.
The 0.9 financing option through BMW financial is pretty awesome IMHO. |

the porsche will hold its value better than the BMW will. at least historically thats they way its been except for the 996 C2 was a crappy car.
i would take the M3 only because i like having a bigger car. but if i had a big car on stand by then the porsche would be my choice. i its a hard choice but if i were to take brand name out of it i just thing the M3 has a little bit of everything that i think the everyday consumer needs and looks for in the car. and then the down side w/ the porsche (it might not be that big of deal but just food for thought ) but if you get into the porsche you kinda are at the bottom of the food chain in the 911 department if you get the C2 vs. were in BMW you are at the near top with an M3. |

But they don't do that on M models It's 2.9 for the M3 (or it was a end of October when I last spoke with my dealer) I got a great lease on a e93 3355iS 1500 drive off a little over 700/month. But I don't like the iS.... i told him I'd take it for 0 drive off and 650/month. He said he'll check back with me.. lease deals on the iS are a joke..

I've decided:
Either the dealer gives me the lease deal I want on the M3 plus a favorable trade-in for my mom's SLK ,or I'll just wait until her lease ends summer 2011 and give her the Z4 and see what I can get (maybe a new twin turbo 63! haha). Plus, by then the new GTR with it's upgraded power and cosmetics etc will be released and the current GTR's value will drop a lot. Thanks for everyone's input

07' CPO. Asking 55. Meaning they would take 50 shipped I would think. Here in D/FW at Park Place Bentley/Maserati/Porsche/MB. Heck, buy it because it looks like a steal. Not a handler like the others mentioned but it gives your want for a vert/luxury/power and only 55...throw the diff back into the market.

From a purely automotive point, I would go with either a Cayman or the e93 M3. A CaymanS is much better priced than the Carrera, and I think it would be a much more satisfying dd than a Carrera. M3 would be a great SoCal car, cabrio with the weather, brilliant BMW handling, quality and a very practical dd (although gas mileage probably wouldn't be great)
Just get which makes you happiest. Or the better option would be to buy an e93 and an e30 beater to daily drive. That's the best option.

I don't like convertible at all I find all of them pretty girlie (Lambo, Ferrari, M3, R8 any convertible. When I drive a fast car I'd rather have a roof over my head. You never know might miss a curve and do a few roll overs.
