You're not mocking him. You're simply pointing out the hypocrisy in his complaint. It's not sarcasm.

To help figure out whether something is sarcastic, say it out loud, and if you didn't use a sarcastic tone of voice, it probably isn't sarcastic.

If you had added something like: "What a fine grammarian you are!", then it would be sarcastic.

Note: I probably screwed up the the grammar somewhere in that last sentence. A quote with an exclamation point mid-sentence is not something I usually deal with. I think the comma goes outside because of the exclamation point, and I think you need a colon before a quote that's a complete sentence, but I'm not sure.

TrackRat, I wonder the same thing. What exactly DO they teach in classrooms these days? Not to turn this into an educational debate, but it appears that schools are more concerned with athletics and other soft interests as opposed to educating the youth in more traditional subjects. It's unacceptable that the youth of today are deficient in BOTH math/science AND the languages!

I also used to review applications and then interview potential applicants.

The sad reality is that any candidate perceived as having the slightest deficiency in their English proficiency (nice rhyming scheme, huh?) was immediately at a disadvantage.

The reality of a client-facing business, I suppose.

Nice rhyme! Yes, there are instances when you can write however you want (like here), but when you want to be taken seriously, you have to at least seem polished.

Educated people write properly regardless of whether it's an online forum, blog, an essay or anything else. People don't choose to write incorrectly if they know how to do it right.

I do like shortening words like "ur" instead of you're or "cuz" instead of because. That just came from text messaging.

Ironic != sarcsastic. As I said, it was ironic that the person complaining about grammar used improper grammar. You pointed out that irony. You did not mock him. Sarcasm can involve irony, but it does not always. Likewise, irony is not always sarcastic.

This thread is funny and illustrative to an extent of my thoughts on this subject. I have for some time not held a person's use of the English language against him simply because it is not an issue that goes to character. There may be several reasons for an adult's inability to string a few words together correctly to form a sentence, many of which are likely to have been from the formative years and, therefore, outside of his control. Typically, none of these reasons makes him an unworthy/bad person or a fool. Some of the brightest and most successful people I know cannot use English correctly. In addition, none of us is perfect, and I have found that snobbery of any variety almost inevitably results in the snob exposing his dirty drawers and arse in embarrassment. As for Bimmerpost, it is just not that important for the spelling and the grammar in a context such as this to be correct, every time. That said, some spelling and grammatical errors can be distracting, but I simply interpret them and move on. It's not that big a deal. Incidentally, I learned English so the use of a word such as "practice" as a verb is a little distracting as well, but then again, immaterial to the effectiveness of what we're all trying to do here.
