Subaru pretty much tamed the latest edition. Not too much getting snapped back into your seat. Plus, Subaru pretty much eliminated the uniqueness of the STI by making the WRX look identical. BS. There is a consensus within the Suby community that the '05 is arguably the best year.

I would love a WRX or STI wagon for a DD, but I will likely go with a 4-door GTI. I know they really aren't in the same league as far as power or fun really, but I can't justify AWD and the associated MPG loss because of it. Plus for daily duty I don't need a super quick car (as I DD my 1M). I had a GLI before and I really loved it, so I will likely make my way back to a VW product. 5-speed is a killer too...I need that 6th gear for highway cruising.

I have never even driven a WRX. Maybe I need to do that and then figure out the DD situation. I guess I prefer the looks/interior of the GTI as well.

I agree, the '05 STi tends to be the most sought after US model. Bringing the wide body style back to the current WRX is something that Subaru fans argued for though. Remember that the GD body style WRX of 2002-2007 was the same wide body of the 2004-2007 STi (except for the wagon). Subaru went with a more mainstream design for the '08 Impreza/WRX hoping to appeal to a larger audience, but upset many of the existing fans with that design lacking "character".
