For those married/unmarried with kids

I'm kinda in the same situation - however, I let the wife drive the GLK as her daily. I have my Accord and Z4, both which are stick. It was a tough sell to purchase the z4 as its another car she can't drive, and she won't learn stick.

So although my Accord is great for taking the daughter around, its still a stick...so no emergency car for her. My plan is to sell the accord and just get a tsx or something, smaller and more nimble. The z4 is a diff story...I may have to get rid of it all together

as she thinks its too much of a luxury.

I would say, if you can, just get the GLK, and keep the Camry and M3...or sell both to get a 4 door auto sedan that you drive.

I always get a kick out of guys saying they have to sell a toy for a family car & complain about it.

It's one thing if you can't afford the toy & a reliable family car. (Maybe you shouldn't be starting a family either, though)

It's another when they sell it b/c they think they need 800cf of cargo space.

I have an E46 M3 Convertible, and it fits my family of 4. My son is 5'10, and sits in the back with his little brother without an issue. I did get rid of my 4Runner, as long distance trips were very uncomfortable with it. I replaced that with my 2010 X5M! so yes, you could very well get an SUV and never regret it.

I grew up with my parents owning vans and suvs. I couldn't imagine the long road trips in a car is all I can say. That and coming back from sports practices/games where I was totally dirty and just hopped right in the suv. It's really a personal choice, but an suv is honestly the way to go for a family. You buy a "weekend" car later in your life again. It all works out.

Do what you gotta do for now. Eventually you will get back into the game once everything settles. I have a 2 yr old and a 4 month old. We have a Toyota Highlander (traded my 08 350z) and a F10 535. The HL is our DD just because it's so much easier to get the carseats in/out and I can just toss the stroller in the back without worrying. The F10 is for quick weekend fun or If i am just going out with my older kid.

LOL, this is why I have a 335i sedan now instead of the M3 my dealer got in (and why I kept my old 325i I do long too - kids, especially 0-5, DESTROY car interiors).

I understand ditching the M for 4 door practicality, but here is what we did.

When we had one, I kept my 325i and we got the Mrs. A 325i wagon used (so kid can destroy and it is not a big deal). She really loved that car and it did everything we needed.

When the second kid came, we went to an X5, which worked great, especially on trips, plenty of room for everything you need to bring (which is more than you think, believe me).

Now that the kids are both over 5 and she is carting around their friends etc, we went to a newer X5 with the 3rd row seat option.

No mini van and we could not be happier. I get my performace fix in my 335i and when we need the transport 1/2 the neighborhood, we can do it just like everyone else, plus the X5 still "drives" like a BMW somewhat.

interesting take. We likely will have 2 kids in the next 3 years. I'm thinking of going with wagon and keeping my E90 M3.

Likely will go with Audi A4 wagon or Accord wagon. Outside chance I may get the X5 with 3rd row seat.

That's exactly what I bought. Awesome car and engine is so far incredible (howeverI have heard the screw you for maintenance on these once they go off warranty, time will tell).

when my M was in for maintenance, I got the X5d for the day. Wow! What a great car. spacious, comfy, gigantic sunroof, and 24 mpg

i'd love to go to an x5 honestly, but money wise, there are alot of cheaper options for an suv that a kid can go nuts in. i haven't heard the x5 having great reliability also.

I've got a 2010 x535d, its got about 36,000 miles, it has been pretty reliable, but it has had it share of programming recalls, and electrical things. Back up camera 'errors' power lift gate not working, license plate lamps not working, now the steering column will not adjust, makes noise but doesn't move.

Most of the problems seem to be related to water getting past some seals in the lift gate, but they are persistent.

Did plenty of long road trips in cars as a kid & I survived.

You don't NEED an SUV for 1 or 2 kids. A sedan will suffice.
