THat first year was the same with the e46 transition to e90, for example there was no xdrive the first year of the F30 which dominates the RWD in the northeast.

So the more recent sales are more representative of the F30. Also in mid late '11 to early '12 they were unloading e90s, I was offered lease deals as low as $199-249 a month.

While styling likely played a part, the biggest reason why the F10 is selling much better than the E60 is because it reaches a broader consumer base. It's not like the the E60 sold poorly. We've all seen the complaints, "BMW sold out to appeal to the Lexus crowd". And I think if you ask people now what they think about the E60 design, there's going to be a good amount who appreciate the Bangle design now because it represented what the E60 was (a sport saloon) vs. the F10 where the design tells you exactly what it's focus is on.

The demographics dictates the sales. BMW is during well because of the baby boomer generation ability to spend more. The 5 series benefits from this generation wanting more than the 3 series. The single urban professionals are loving the 328, 335, X3, M3 and M5.

Cash is king, it's all good!

The figures do not have US 320 sales yet. The numbers will go up a fair bit once dealers have in stock 320s.

I dont think it was until recently that they were allowed to be sold here in califronia.. I'm pretty sure they were available in other states tho. I'm curious as well.

I meant historically on the 3 Coupe slide. They've sold less and less since 2007. I guess, as someone else said, the 3 is tilting toward a younger demographic who need the sedan for utility and convenience.

I read recently that the combined A4 and A5 global sales figure was 433,000 for 2012. That is actually higher than all 3 series models combined!

No wonder BMW is snatching up the Audi sales chief.

Really? Source?

Us sales were higher of the 3 than the a4/5, odd that it would be that different globally.

5er close run with the 3er and outselling one year - here if you look at a 320d vs 520d, to get them to the same spec, the 320d was costing more than the 520d - 520d is a bargain (don't let BMW know though).

Note: many people asked me how I get production/sales data. The answer is to read annual reports of manufacturers (like this), going through hundreds of pages and doing some calculation if necessary. There is no short-cut.
Granted it's not a grade A source, but this guy follows the auto industry with the enthusiasm of a 12 year old. I'm guessing even if the A4+A5 sales didn't surpass the 3er, it has come pretty close at least.

A4 & A5 combined did outsell the 3 series range. Once the 3GT and the 4GC are launched, and there is a full year of F31 sales, I'd imagine BMW to be in the lead.

In so much as it demonstrates that people are looking for models othen than a saloon/sedan and estate/tourer/avant. BMW are covering this threat off well because they will offer the 4 gran coupe to appeal the the 4 door coupe crowd (that buy the A5 sport back) and something more practical and less dull than the tourer in the 3GT. I think I'm right in saying that the A5 sport back is less practical than the A4, meaning that many people may not actually be cross-shopping it with the 3Gt anyway.

my main issue is as long as you are following someone else
you will never be a leader, or a winner

i'm genuinely worried about BMW
everything they do now is following in Audi's foot steps
the whole m135i etc is basically what audi does with their S line
the 3/4 series is basically what audi did with the A4/A5

the only thing of note that they are doing is focusing on carbon fiber, but that's more a long term thing.
i'm not convinced the i3/i8 will amount to much
and i'm sure those cost a lot to develop
meanwhile i see less and less focus on the "ultimate driving machine" thing
with the electric power steering, turbocharging etc
you can't be all things to all people
if you cater to every single tiny little niche of a market
you are over extending yourself, and something will break
