Me: Man I was just about to ask you for $50.

I was approached last week when I was getting gas and the dude walked up to me and cut straight to it. He goes "man I see you got a beautiful car, I've had a long day and I need 66 cents more to get a beer, think you can help a brotha out?" I gladly gave him 2 dollars and told him to get a 40. I didn't have to listen to no BS story and he actually told me what he was going to buy, he walked out the gas station happy as could be with a magnum 40 in a brown paper bag and came bag and shook my hand and said thank you.

The people who are much more direct are the ones that I'm more likely to give money to. The ones who are trying to beat around the bush, or seems sketchy are very unlikely to get anything. There have a been a few right after dusk who have come up to me and on those days I'm glad I carry.

The next best thing to do in those situations when they're asking for money for the train, etc. is to offer to buy it for them. They don't expect that response and it gets very awkward for them since they have no interest in a ticket/gas/sandwich and only want the cash. Even buying it for them is not advisable as that could lead you being mugged when you pull out your wallet. Best advice is to tell them to fuck off... nicely, of course.

Last time someone did that to me in a parking lot, they said they needed money to buy food. I said, "Well I don't have any cash, but I can take you into that Subway there and get you a meal." They got all weird and said, "Uhh, nevermind."

Most of them just want the cash.

Working in a downtown location, I get approached all the time by people asking for money for various things. Many of them are asking for bus fare out of town. I always tell them I don't have cash and move on. Who's to say one of them won't mug me as soon as I pull out my wallet, or other panhandlers approach after seeing me giving out cash.

However, there was one time I did give out some cash. A guy in a suit pushing a stroller with a baby approached me on the street and said he was just at a job interview and was heading to another one but was out of gas. He pointed to his car on the street where his wife was standing and waving back. I only had a $10 dollar bill in my wallet, but gave it to him thinking I was helping a family in need. Sure enough I was wrong and should have trusted my instinct. A couple of months later I saw the same guy in the same suit pulling the same scam on other random people off the street. He was moving from one block to the next telling people his story and pointing at any nearby car as "his car out of gas". Lesson learned.

The last time I was approached I was putting air in a tire of my truck. This guy came up and asked if I could spare some change. I said I don't have any cash on me. I really didn't. I never carry cash. Anyway I squatted down and started putting air in my tire and he stuck a knife to my back and told me to give him my wallet. I took his knife and left him broken and bleeding on the ground. It's a good thing for him that my 45 was still in my truck.
A guy I worked with at the last hospital I was at was also assaulted at the same gas station. He was pumping gas and some guy came up starting trouble. He took the nozzle out of his car and sprayed the dude head to toe. Freaking brilliant!

Well random people approach me all the time at gas stations (especially at night) and ask me for gas money...
90% of the time I am able to tell whether they really need gas or just fooling me
