The newer cars ALL look bloated and terrible, like a bar of soap left in the shower far too long - frumpy, bloated and those upright flat front ends. Horrible. |

I didnt love everything he made, but E92 (3coupe) & E63 (6er) were fabulous.
SHARKS. First thing i thought when i saw both of'em. I love new 6er and 4 but they aren't menacing as bangle's squales ! |

I've always like Chris' designs, and have always lobbied that the uniqueness and polarizing nature of each of his designs were much better than the "corporate" look of most modern brands.
I'm sure it was part of the creative license that the executive team at BMW gave to him to "shake up" the industry (successfully) but it is a way more interesting route to go. I really dislike the trends of modern design. Looking at the rear of the F series line takes a car guy to tell the difference between 3/5/7. I guess that's what they want though, as long as the drones think "BMW" when they see it, and go to a dealer to see which one fits their monthly lease expense. The Z3 is ugly though, I want to like it and the rear is good but that front hood line that shapes the lights is just weird. The 7 is also a problem because you can get one for the price of some special edition Jordan's so most of them I see are busted up and have $500 24 inch rims on them.

What's special about Chris Bangle is how smart and cultivated he is...And the questions he asks made car designers think differently about cars.
Whether you like it or not, each curve and line on a car designed by his team could be justified because it followed a concept, an idea. Just look at the old BMW presentations when Chris used to explain the design thinking behind each model...and compare this to newer presentation where they're always just repeating the same generic thing over and over again. New BMW designs are nice looking, but they lack intelligence and breakthrough thinking, and I guess this is what I miss the most. |

I just never could get over those headlights. Everyone has different tastes. To me BMWs are a mature looking understated car and not flashy "look at me" mobiles; a feature I happen to like very much.

All designers have hits and misses like everyone in life. If he did the E46, Kudos. Beautiful cars. The Z4 was pretty good especially the coupe. The rest was ugly. Even years later, the stuff was never as attractive as the early stuff. Of course taste is personal, but the front of the 6 series, the 7 series and even the E90/92s never "beautiful". I think everyone has to be honest about the body of work and later is his career, some of the stuff was so hideous that I am glad he left BMW. The 1 series was not right. Audi stole the show. Look at the A6/S6, A4, A8s etc. Those cars were beautiful and if they would've had BMW drivetrains, that would've been amazing.

The E60 is fabulous. It still looks more modern than the F10 and it has a much sportier geometry and drive. As long as it has the sport pkg or M pkg that is. It looks aweful with 17 wheels and superb with the M5 wheels. The E60 M5 is the coolest sedan ever made and brings out the design to it's peak. I wish he had stayed with BMW.

we have two of bangle cars, I have a modified e85 z4 and an e60. it amazed me that I just saw it in movement on a bmw showroom 2 days ago and its a different car when you see it in motion, it stole the looks from the current ten cars there and I felt, how do i put it, proud of my car, it just looked so good I couldn't believe it was mine… def a timeless design, polarizing, but an attention whore nevertheless.

I'd love to add a z4 M Coupe to my collection, perhaps one day.
Thanks for sharing! Enjoyed the read!

e46 sedan and e92 coupe are timeless and elegant. Keepers. And I bellied up and bought a Z4m also. Don't have it now. Never did like his 7 and 5 series though.

I didn't care for the vast majority of his designs. Imo much of it was doing things just to be different, evocative which also provoked some with his added pomposity. For that he succeeded.
Most of what I see in the current design language of BMW has not built on what he did whatsoever. I see that time period as an exercise in futility while he was at the helm. He did shake things up to be sure but other than the M3's I wasn't interested in BMW during the last decade.

All most of my BMW cars that I owned were from his era. I loved my E65, E60, E39, E46 and E92. Great looking cars that pushed the boundaries. Now BMW is into bland and conservative styling. A Kia Optima looks nicer then a BMW 5 series.....sad
Also, if you are BMW owner and did not like E46, E39, E92, E60 and E65 then you need reality check....lol!! You deserve the bland junk they are making now.lol!!
