Operating a scanner in your vehicle is illegal in New York State. However they have scanner apps you can have on your iPhone. Is that also illegal to listen to in your car?

I think they purposely leave it open for the news outlets. On our tactical channels is where we communicate with each other.

Knowing that old dumb law, it probably is.

Go take the 35-question ham radio license test, and get the basic Technician license. Instant ticket to turn your vehicle(s) into rolling pin cushions covered with antennas, and gives you a free pass on the no-scanner law.

Of course, there's still the NY State issue of the cellular hands-free law, and how nobody knows if it applies to handheld two-way radios or even microphones.....
