A local restaurant here has a bourbon drink I became obsessed with. So I decided to try to recreate it. All I had to go off was the description from the menu. I knew it was bourbon, had dried pears as a garnish, could taste/smell cinnamon and had some kind of pear liquor. Anyways tried all kinds of combinations but could not get it right. The only pear liquor I could find at the store was waaaaay off. Very clovery tasting with almost no cinnamon so I decided to make my own.
Put some cut up pears, with cinnamon stick in a jar with sugar and vodka for 24/hours. That stuff came out fantastic! I also it hard to find decent dried pears online and the ones that were decent were $$$$ so decided to make some dried pears also. Anyways the final recipe I came up with with was equal parts bourbon and pear liquor (can go more or less depending how sweet you want it), dash of walnut bitters, 1/4 oz lemon juice, touch of maple syrup shaken well and served on the rocks with dried pears. Sooooo good I had to force myself to stop drinking it. |

Meh. Whiskey in my coffee is okay. Coffee in my whiskey? Not so much.

I did some pretty extensive Photoshop work for a friend who's writing a research article. This was his way of thanking me. I would have done the work for nothing just because he's a long time friend, but the reward will be appreciated. Slowly.

Nice selection of Islay malts.
I had a 4 day distillery tour planned on Islay in June 2020 with a mate, that we had to cancel, haven’t had a chance to rearrange yet. We had planned the guided tours of each one. I have a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year old, Lagavulin 16 and Bushmills Blackbush in the kitchen cabinet as my everyday go to’s, and have the more unusual stuff in the dining room butlers cabinet, various Scottish malts, some Irish malts, Swedish malt and a couple of Japanese malts. I have an Islay Gin too, but not really a gin drinker, so hardly touched! I also have a reserve bottle (first bottling from a new Scottish distillery), but it is only a 5 or 8 year old, so not expecting much from it, however, I have kept it unopened, as it’s value is higher than most of my others - but everything else is open! Apart from this one, I open every new bottle that comes into the house, so that there is no excuse not to drink it! Enjoy your tipples!

Three greats. The QC and Ardbeg 10 are my regulars (not ultimate fav's but top of the price/value point so they are more like the daily).
That Bruichladdich is part of a 4-way study to compare types of barley and peated vs unpeated - cool to see how such a subtle thing like type of barley makes such a difference. I'm a peat lover, so I do a lot more of the Port Charlotte. |
