I like the elements/content but everything looks shifted to the right (balance of objects). I think if you were more to the right and get the building corner across the street center of frame and vertical it would do more for me.
That walk/don't walk sign kills that column.

Nice shot and glad to see the ospreys are making use of surplus stuff. But man, the amount of wasted material and space at closed bases is staggering. Someone on POTN started a thread about Ft. Ord. Hundreds of acres and buildings sitting empty and unused for years. Sad.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm planning to head back down there to get some more shots in, and will try and reshoot this one.

David,
Oh, I thought you were gone already.
How about you move more to the curb and see if you can put that walk sign right up against the column and drop down low so the street level is more center of frame (flat horizon). I don't know how going lower would look but I thought it might straighten out the street.

I live 45 mins from Miami, and go down there often ..

I'd have to be further back, the building is really tall. What I really want to do is a shift panorama with my TS-E 17 from that corner. That would ensure perfectly straight verticals, flat street, and full building in the resulting photo.

Wth the Fisheye, I didn't mind the leaning back look as much. If I place the camera more flat (parallel to horizon) then half of the image would be filled with the street and sidewalk, especially at the 12mm or so that this shot was taken. And I am not sure the whole building would still be in the shot. That was kind of my dilemma. And being back too much further would make the building less prominent. I really like that building though.

Going low with the Fisheye would likely accentuate the problem, I think - not 100% sure. But I will try it out. Definitely plan to bust out the TS-E 17 from that spot, as well.

Part of the problem I've been having with the Fisheye is using it creatively where it's not just another tacky fisheye shot for the sake of a fisheye shot... I took like 20 shots from 3 different locations and various angles, and dumped all of them except this one.

I thought maybe you could just angle it up more to get the whole thing in and go for the heavy distortion.

Gotcha, I misunderstood. Yeah that would work from a low angle.

Distortion: Go big or go home!

And since this the snapshot thread ...

I agree, it is sad. Especially when I remember working at these locations when they were hubs of activity. However I will say a lot of Mare Island is coming back to life. A lot of small manufacturers are taking over the large buildings, and one company is even using one of the old dry docks. And they shoot episodes of Mythbusters out there often as well

They are actually stripping this ship down to get ready to tow through the canal for final scrapping

Didn't you take a pic of that ship awhile back?

That was a different one from last year. They have already scrapped that in Texas. The ghost fleet out in Suisun Bay is shrinking rapidly.

Great view. I'd walk up to the fence to exclude the fence and the tree from the view. Also, I'd make sure the horizon is level. It's such a great view, you could show us many more shots as the view changes.

Welcome.

Ed, are there enough Osprey that you sit on the edge of the dock for and hour or two and catch one fishing? I'd be tempted to try that when the light is good and behind me.

Yes there are, and that is in my near future plans. I counted at least ten different birds in that one area of the old base.

Was in Toronto on business this week. Stupidly long hours due to the nature of my trip so I didn't get to explore or take as many photos as i'd like to. Apparently a theme at my firm is to have offices with sweet views. This was literally behind where they placed my temporary desk. Glad I got a window seat for once.
