Divided road as in opposing directions of travel? You would need to stop.
So I don't have to yield to emergency lights, but I gotta let some snot-nosed kid wander off the bus with his face in a phone???

NY State VTL says that you must stop for a school bus flashing red lights even on a divided highway with a concrete barrier/fence/median between the opposing travel lanes.

As for the snot-nosed kids, our school busses stop at every single house and leave the lights flashing for five minutes waiting for each kid to stumble out of their house and out to the curb. Heaven forbid that they get hypothermia standing at the curb for a few minutes on a frigid 45 F morning!

This belongs more in the old farts thread, but my school bus stop back in the day was a five block walk from our house. If nobody was standing there to be picked up, the bus driver wouldn't even slow down as they passed! Then, there was the humiliation of having to walk five blocks home, and ask your parents to drive you to school because you were not responsible enough to make it to the bus stop on time...and then having all of the kids who were on the bus laughing at you getting out of mommy's car when you finally got to the school.....

Oh, and most of the school busses around here are equipped with cameras specifically to catch drivers passing them while flashing red so that tickets can be mailed.....

Quote:
...When officers arrived, the man did not cooperate and had to be removed from the vehicle, the police said.

However, as they were taking Mr Johnson into custody, an officer noticed “a firearm coming outside the vehicle”. The officer, who was able to deflect the weapon by swiping the gun to the side as it fired into a restaurant awning, yelled “kid” to his colleagues.

The child was sitting in the back seat with his three-year-old sibling and had been “encouraged” to fire the gun by their father, police said.

The officer sustained a minor injury to his arm.

Calling it a sad day for the community, Sheriff Rosie Rivera said: “To have an adult think it is OK to encourage a four-year-old to pull a firearm and shoot at police illustrates how out of hand the campaign against police has gotten.”

She added: “This is a child who thought it was okay to pull a firearm and shoot that firearm at police. I’ve never seen anything like this in my 28 years.”

You completely glossed over SUBSECTION (a) and went straight to (b)(1) where it talks about divided highways and multi-lane highways. Subsection (a) is where your school zones will be. Remember I asked a follow-up question to better understand what he was asking (…and what he meant by "divided"; the vehicle code's definition and a person's definition likely/usually differ). A divided roadway and a divided highway are two different things, and division usually refers to some sort of median or defined delineation. Most school zones have no delineation for opposing directions of travel and generally have no medians (…hence the reason for the vehicle code). If there's potential that a child could run into your path of travel, you need to stop. Thanks for playing though!

The laws didn't change, but the rules definitely have. Parking enforcement and/or local LEO's just don't enforce it…….

….much in the same way the violation of parking too close to [or in front of a fire hydrant] isn't really enforced much.

And as long as I put my hazard lights on, I can park any-freaking-where I decide is convenient, right? Middle of the street, handicapped, fire hydrant, red lines of the no parking zone. . .

Pretty much every Uber driver seems to do this now. Recent example: across from a large supermarket by UCLA, at least 10 cars lined up in the median/turn lane with their flashers on, nobody in the car, blocking traffic, not a cop or parking enforcement in sight (yet, I'll get a parking ticket + no front plate ticket within 30 seconds after my meter expires (in both Los Angeles city and Beverly Hills city). Go figure…

I get it's LA / Cali, but that seems to be rather annoying.

I am still amazed by the number of vehicles (personal, driveshare etc) that line up along the airport roads with impunity. I get that there's a cost to going into a paid parking lot that hits the bottom line, but even where there are free parking lots, people seem to not want to use them.

Sedan_Clan: Can you explain that difference between subsections on where one has to legally stop for a school bus in the opposite direction please? I've read it a couple of times, but I can't seem to get the nuance - what makes one divided road different than another?

I'll try to explain with photos. Here are two different school zone areas: one where there is no/very little and/or inconsistent delineation and one with a raised concrete center median. That center median is a division.

Thank you.
If I'm deciphering it correctly, E. Temple Av (bottom pic) has the median?
