Nope heard the scam many times...
Although I did tell one chick that was kinda cute that if she showed me her things I'd give her a $5.... Nice Things, and quite the little presentation so yeah she got a $10. I don't mind being scammed if there's something in it for me.

Never give crack money. I'm used to ignoring beggars, sounds cruel but I've lived in a poor country and I would be happy to give out food but never money for drugs or pimps. Gas my ass :P

What is she going to do after the $10 in gas is gone? She is going to beg someone else for the money they worked for. Maybe you should have given her $5 in gas and $5 in cash so she can use that money to pay her mortgage.
You were scammed. NEVER give money to beggars. A recent report in a newspaper in Oregon, Coos Bay police followed panhandlers in a Home Depot parking lot. It found, that on average, these panhandlers made over $300 dollars a day while the cashiers inside Home Depot make less than that in a week. With a baby the amount jumps to about $500 a day. These people panhandle for a living and actually own vehicles and homes. Even if it was a legitimate person in need, what is that $10 buying them? You are just postponing the inevitable. You know, them actually being forced to get a job instead of being handed money for doing nothing. |

i gave money to an old lady with a little girl (around 3) in front of a store asking for "gas money". about a month later, the same old lady, without the girl this time, has a dog with her, knocked on my window asking for gas money again.
guess what... |

Whenever bums ask me for money, I always say: "Sorry, I pay with plastic." Not a word of a lie, I really never pay with cash, just credit or debit.
Once I got a good response: "I used to" said one bearded homeless man. I then laughed at his quick witted come-back and next time I saw him he was coincidentally sitting beside my car as I stepped out, panhandling. I tossed him about $5 in quarters from my car's ashtray I'd saved prior for parking meters and told him to watch my car for me. But besides that one time event, I never give anything to the homeless. I have to pay high Canadian taxes, so I figure that's good enough. Once you give something free to someone, you ruin them. But then again, they're already mostly ruined anyways since I'm sure they've had their fare share of free stuff granted. Here in socialist Canada, where the unemployment rate is double to the US rate and taxes are much higher, there's tons of food banks and shelters where they go to get food whenever they want. The area I work at in downtown Ottawa has three Missions spaced 5 blocks apart, and the vagrants are crawling everywhere in between. I've never had the gas station situation arrise, but when it does, if anything I'll offer to pump in gas instead of giving that person money. I'm not religious, but I know super nice generous religious folks that won't give money to bums, only food as an exception claiming that the more money you give these people, the more you're helping them to sin and do worse than before, or something like that. Therefore, if you're encouraging sinful acts upon others, that makes you commiting a sin as well. -D.J. |

I agree that if I did give money, I'd go and pay the cashier directly. There's a homeless guy I go past every day on my way to work. Often thought about giving him a few bucks, but then realize he could be getting a few bucks from people all day and making as much as me.

I once gave $20 to a homeless lady because I saw her all the time by my high school and new that she wasn't a crackhead that was going to blow the money on dope. So, you didn't do anything wrong. I refuse to help beggers though... go get a job.

Back in HS, me and a friend thought that it would be a great idea to get an ice cream truck. To make a long story short, one night we were out at around 2:00am trying to sell icecream on a friday night , and this girl came up to the truck and was just asking to get something for free. She said that she only had a quarter, but she was cute. I told her that for two tits and a quarter she could get a firecracker JR (lol... this was the ice pop that only costed us like 15 cents a piece ), and she ended up with the free icecream.

Referring to the OP, you are a good person to do this. True, many folks do this as a scam. The way I see it, you never know when that person really needs it or not, especially given it was a young mother. I also look at it from another angle: Someday it might be you stuck on that highway. I always seem to have good luck when it comes to situations like these, makes me wonder if it was because even when I doubted the motive, I would occasionally give a hand. Sometimes its that one drink or that one meal that gets a person through he day. Sad but true. Somewhat reccently, I was at a gas station and a motorcyclist driving a beat up triumph without an cap rode up. The guy asked me for $10 so he could buy a new gas cap. I thought about it and was skeptical, but in the end, because I have been in similar situations myself, I gave him the $10. Charity is a funny thing. So many people donate to organizations that are true scams and mislead people to thinking they are legit. At least when you donate to someone at a gas station or the side of the offramp, you know what you could be contributing to.

I definitely would.
So as most of the people in my country. They'll even drop you off if they also don't have spare money. Or pump out some gas from their own vehicle and transfer it to you... being nice won't hurt you. Plus 10 bucks is vallet money, its no big deal...

I hate to asking to borrow money, even to my closest friend.
I think if I even run out of gas and I don't have any money ( lost wallet ) I will 1st call any friend to see if the can come to help me if not I prefer to call tow truck before begging for money. however I have AAA + I have hidden in my car my Mobil Speedpass that is connected directly to my bank account. so if someday some one stole my wallet at least I have money to put gas and buy something to eat at the gas station before going home

It's a pretty good scam, happened to me about 2 weeks ago. The guy was driving an '08 Maxima and said he just lost his job and is not a bum, he just needs $20 so he can get some gas. These guys know how to play on the sympathies of others. Before the day is done, he made the same $700 that you did, only difference is you get SS, HI, fed, state, and city taxes deducted.
But it's like anything else, if it makes you feel good, who cares what the other person is doing with the money. I like to think good karma could come your way by being kind. I like to think that not falling victim to a scam doesn't necessarily give you bad karma. If it did, imagine how much you'd have to shell out due to chain emails... |
