Why do some people call a BMW a "BM?"

Japan uses the short cut term "BM" as well to refer to BMW's. And "Benz" for Mercedes Benz.

In spanish culture we also say BM. Pronounced beh emme. It sounds weird when saying BMW though in Spanish.
