If BMW wants to compete they better step up the timeframe quite aggressively. If they don't when they arrive at 2025 they will find the world is already at 2040 and they are playing catch up just like they are today
Seems quite a realistic timescale to me. Tesla only make electric cars and how many people do you know who own one? I know just one!! BMW don't need to suddenly go all electric because people won't buy them yet due to cost! Seven years is the approximate manufacturing lifespan of most cars! By then many more people will be interested in EVs and the cost will have come down! Who actually cares where Tesla are in 7 years.... by the time their cars exist in a marketplace full of competition, they'll probably switch to making solar powered washing machines or something!!

You can clearly see the i5 silhouette looks
Nothing like the images from the patent images. The dash to axel is longer on the silhouette and the overall shape is also sleeker.

The patent images may have been an early direction or just a design that holds lots of their design cues for the "I" brand but I can guarantee it will not be what the patent drawings show.

I hope it does! Massive advances happening with lightweight batteries and other tech. Imagine an Mcar with P100D level power in a lighter weight coupe with M-tuned chassis/suspension. Can you imagine how much fun that could be? Won't be a track star in the near future but holy schmoly it could be a great around-the-towner.

Get ready because you can't ignore some of the benefits of electric. Simplicity of drivetrain leaves lots of time for chassis tuning

Please Porsche price a Mission E model below $100k so we don't need to care what anyone else does... That car is the most perfectly shaped sedan I've ever seen. Make you go: Tesla who? Range, who cares, just hand it over NOW

This is not about a 100k EV's... This car will compete w/ the Model 3.

I personally will take the first dual motor Boxster S.

Comparing the roofline from the 3D and the one covered on the image from BMW it's not the same - The one under cover has more 3-series like trunk where the 3D has more of a A5 Sportsback trunk-less design... And please GOD don't make that renders back end come to life - it's terrible!!

Seriously!!!! I don't get it. They should just leave the M brand out of this electronic warfare they are about to have. Imagine an electric M4 - no sound, no soul lol

EVs give you a lot of new flexibility and freedom to create stunning designs. 100k or 50k the very least you would expect from a company like BMW is something nicer than Model 3 which is not a bad looking car. It was 2 years ago Porsche showed the Mission E. If what BMW has under that tarp is a Prius looking thingy it's no good. Same thing if it's a regular 3 series look, no good since they don't take advantage of all new flexibility with an EV design. I'm not sure it is though, the outlines look wider and lower than the Prius style so let's see, maybe we'll be stunned in a good way

I hope you are right. Otherwise they will get left behind.

I agree if it looks anything like those patented sketches they're going to be laughed at.

Because in 20 years or less, you won't be allowed to buy a gas or diesel vehicle in many EU countries.

Scotland is now saying no gas or diesel as of 2032. That is only 15 years away.

I hope this means they plan to have at least 4 fully electric models by 2020, if they want to stay ahead in this space. The eDrive is a good start but is not going to cut it. A fully electric 3 series is a no brainer especially once we start seeing Tesla model 3s out there.

Design wise, everything looks promising except the rear-end. Rear-end looks horrific. Very 5GT like

So BMW "called shotgun" first, then? I think the Mercedes press release I linked to and use of the term CASE dates back only to last year's Paris show which was in September (it alternates bi-anually with Frankfurt). As you you point out, BMW used ACES as early as July of last year.

At any rate, I still think BMW has gone absolutely scatter-brain with their electric strategy. They are all over the place.

And what happened to the electric 3 Series that was spoken about in the other thread I linked to, which was suggested to be coming to Frankfurt? Has that too now been scrubbed in favor of promoting the i brand? What about the announcement just recently of electric versions of other CLAR BMW Series vehicles? All gone? Just what the heck are they doing? Whose steering the ship, BMW?
I couldn't agree more, their strategy is all over the place and they've missed golden opportunities
As critical as I am being I will also say I think the other underlying problem manufacturers have (especially BMW) is that if you differentiate your electric models too much, you draw attention to them but leave people doubting and not understanding how it fits with the existing line up, and maybe even clinging to what they know. Yet if you simply integrate them into the model stream they don't have a special enough feeling. I know the i3 is far more memorable than the A3 e-tron.

I'm not sure how you achieve this balance of differentiating enough to stand out without being so separate that it doesn't work. However, I stand by my analysis that the potential of the i8 was missed and no-where-near exploited enough, especially with M kept away.
