But if it's not blue and white with BMW written on it, how will the unwashed masses know I'm driving a BMW and am therefore superior to them!?
They'll think I'm just driving some commoner car. Unless I can get RED roundels on my M3 AMG ZCP CSL Type-R? |

The more I think about it, the more I think the black-and-white logo makes sense for BMW. Have you driven by a BMW dealer lately? It's a sea of black and white cars, with a few grays thrown in for variety. It's like watching a car commercial on a '50's black-and-white TV.

Its like as if BMW was Rolex and it is now turning into Tag Heuer. So unnecessary. This is pretty weak. i brand was ok already for electrics. Why this? Ultimate luxury? Wtf is this.

This would be a very silly move. The iconic blue and white roundel is a very distinctive sign which triggers fascination in many people, enthusiast or not, and is the main reason BMWs are selling (even when the products usurp the brand's heritage by being average driving machines). Slapping a black and white logo would take away some of the charm and dilute the immediate identification with all the iconic models which have built BMW's aura.
I hope it's only a marketing gimmick for the online/paper communication around these high-end models, not about actual logos for the cars' front and rear, rims, steering wheel... Alfa Romeo put black and white logos on the Giulia's rims and steering wheel, seemingly in order to give it a more serious and upmarket feel, well it looks so dull and tasteless when you know the colors of the actual logo. If anything, changing the logos on the high-end BMWs would only suggest a lack of confidence and damage both these models' and the lesser models' image, instead of having a strong and sole identity throughout the whole range. Which kind of makes sense, since the Mercedes group doesn't own sportscar or luxury brands like its rivals BMW (Rolls-Royce) and VW/Audi (Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche...), so Mercedes has to cover the whole spectrum all by themselves and they are logically doing so by developing and expanding the already existing AMG and Maybach sub-brands... Still with the three-pointed star on the hood though, Mercedes is confident enough to not think about altering its logo like BMW does... Last edited by advantage20; 09-13-2017 at 05:21 PM.. |

Now will people presently running these badges on their vehicles (ebay as an example) be "grandfathered in" and be able to avoid the aforementioned "wanna be, rebadged etc" ridicule of the forum community by stating "hey I had these before....." or are they going to be lumped in with the people rushing out to buy these based on this announcement.
Furthermore will the two groups "the pre-announcement black badgers" be able to peacefully co-exist with the "post-announcement black badgers" I mean this really could get ugly...I guess only time will tell |

Makes sense to me actually. BMW ran out of ways to make their ridiculously overpriced cars even more overpriced, so they fell back on the tried and true method of badge whoring.

Mercedes-AMG reveal the project one at Frankfurt, basicly a street legal f1 car, 1000hp derived from 6 cylinders. The pinnacle of engineering.
BMW reveals a black and white logo. This is totally par for course for the trajectories of the respective brands. One has a high level of engineering devoted to a bright future. The other wants to create buzz with a different colored logo. And oh yes don't forget some good old fashion badge engineering, gts will be rebadged as the csl. Some more high level engineering the enthusiasts crave. It seems pretty obvious why anyone with self respect has long left the company. And just for the extra punch in the gut mercedes actually makes cars with black and white logo, the "black series". They also happen to be complete animals which demolish any of their contemporaries. What has become of bmw. They love talking about their "sound logo" or their black and white logo, etc... Atleast alpina still seems to understand their logo is only as good as the car it's on.
