In my particular instance, I have not bought a vehicle for myself since '01. I bought a Ford Lightning and I was happy with that truck and didn't need or want another vehicle. I bought a six year old F30 a little over a year ago on a whim. I could have just as well bought an M3. Kinda puzzling to say I shouldn't have a BMW just because I qualify for a stimulus check. I guess painting with a broad brush.....

Well you know, I was going to say "hookers, blow, steak, and martinis" but it's only $1200 and I have my quality standards for all. $1,200 barely cover my $1k hooker and $200 in blow for her.

Yeah, we'd have to pool a few stimulus checks for all of those. Economies of scale...

This thread is fantastic. Not everyone is carrying a $1,000 lease payment or lives in NYC/SF/LA. Threads like this make me miss the old bimmerforums days.

My wife is a stay at home mom with toddlers and we're jointly under the $150k threshold. We bought our house in Las Vegas as the recession was ending in 2012. Guess I should sell my cars?

In all seriousness, stock most away for a rainy day and put some towards our highest interest debt.

A lot of us are self-employed. My cars are a business expense, as well as a portion of my mortgage because I have a home office. That means partial utilities and maintenance too. So there's personal income, of which I pay myself only enough for basic necessities and personal investments. Then there's my corporate income, which is significantly more, but there are many deductions and tax breaks to reduce taxable income. If she was still working we wouldn't have qualified. So I got the full amount plus the child bonus.

I shouldn't qualify for the stimulus check, I didn't expect it, and I didn't ask for it. But because I have a great accountant who came up with a good tax plan, I got one. I'm sure many more M2/3/4/6/8 owners or anyone who can do this are doing the same. It's just smart accounting.

I'm saving it. Or getting track wheels when this is over.

Financial status snobbery aside, I keep seeing reports (rumors, innuendo, etc) that these checks are just an advance on next year's tax returns. As in, if you got $2400 as a couple out of this, your return for next year will be whatever your expected tax return would have been, minus $2400. That you could end up owing taxes next year because of this.

Anyone with more knowledge (and less whiskey in them than I) care to comment? Tell me I'm wrong.

That does not surprise me at all, in fact it makes perfect sense. Ain't that how the gubmint works? Dangle a lil money in yer face and make you think you getting something, all the while plotting how to get it back plus interest?

Really just an advanced payment of a tax credit for the 2020 tax year.
