One of the ways to avoid having to pay for a red-light camera ticket was explained to me from of all persons, a traffic judge - who btw drives a tricked out 340i and has always driven BMW's he said.

Anyway, he said this - and I kid you not he said it is totally legal and works.

His car is registered to his wife and his wife's car is registered to him. Now, in the protracted legal spew of what the ticket says, if the person caught on camera is not you the registered owner - you do not have to pay the ticket - and that's actually explained on the ticket. I've done this once before and was worried about repercussions....but it worked. So it's kind of an insider 'Pro Tip' - interested if anyone else has heard of this or used this too?

Cheers,
Merlin

I got one here in Houston years back. i went thru the intersection on a yellow light no question. Only thing was if I had hit my breaks the 18 wheeler behind be would have plowed us both into the intersection. the video clearly showed this. I took it to court and let them watch the video . it got dismissed but still coast me hours of time. the company issuing the citation should have reviewed the video but there is no Money in that. Texas did get rid of them because it was proven the companies were ripping people off with their program of the lights.

I fight all my tickets in court, no matter what. It's always gotten reduced in fine and demerits. My neighbor is a criminal justice defense lawyer also, and told me to always fight them because of bullying that the police will try to do if they dont think you know the law. And paying without dispute is admitting to it.
I take my foot off the pedal and coast thru the yellow's, because the sensor is looking for speed increasing through the intersection, not someone still going through it. Not sure if they work like this everywhere, but just a suggestion.

Also, most Escort radar models will tell you when you're approaching a red light camera before you get to it.

I have a feeling I know the light … Beverly onto Wilshire? That yellow arrow lasts like 2 seconds (3 cars MAX can go through, if they go quickly).

Apparently, camera tickets now DO count as a point against your license (moving violation); they used to just be a fee (like a parking ticket). I had one recently, also in BH. I decided to "fight" it by hiring one of those ticket clinic attorneys. I was found "guilty," but allowed to take driving school so no point on the license. I probably could have done that myself by going to court (I'm an attorney), but the hassle and having to take time off was not worth it.

The cameras record video as well, so if you get the ticket, best be sure there was a malfunction, of there is no getting out of it (even if your face is slightly obscured, etc.) The camera tech has apparently gotten a lot better since the early days where you could just say "that's not me and you can't really prove it is me from the photo."

That being said, you may never get the ticket! These are usually reviewed. I was in BH and saw a flash going through a fully green light (countdown on the walk sign was 10 seconds, at least, so not even close to turning yellow). I never received the ticket, and nothing ever showed up on my license (I checked to be absolutely sure).

I am not sure if this is correct in California anymore. When I looked up my ticket, it said that a point would be assessed against my license (like a speeding ticket). That is why I hired a traffic attorney to reduce it to no points (with traffic school). Honestly, probably easier to fight a speeding ticket/actual cop pulling you over nowadays :/

Say it out appropriately loud then. Just mind explicit wording in public prohibition, if any.

It's wise you don't drive a (new) BMW then. Otherwise you'd mind their Connected Drive, or just the recent "Emergency Call" feature that has evolved into a mandatory "raping assistance" in the not-so-free world. Make sure a SIM card is ripped out of your car with prejudice if you want privacy, but you'll have to drive "the old way" missing Internet driven features as well. And leave your phone behind, too.

I don't pay mine. It's a crock of shit. If you don't pay, they increase the fee and eventually someone tacks it in on your credit report. On the paper it says if you choose to pay, well I choose not to.

You're a brave soul.

Tying this in a bit with BMW, this is what I liked about the Traffic Camera Information system option available in our cars. I felt it was a worthy investment. It's part of ConnectedDrive.

Surprised that these haven't made their way out here to LA. They are still randomly and manually pulling people over for loud exhausts. Especially in Beverly Hills

I got one in Lakewood, WA several years ago.
They included a website link where I could watch myself doing a VERY gentle California stop. Yes, the car never came to a complete stop before I safely turned right during a red light. Total horse shit.
No evidence of me driving the car though.
I said it wasn’t me driving the car. They came back with a very official sounding threat that I needed to produce who was driving or else! I probably could’ve dug my heels in right there (it’s their job to convict, not mine), but I have them a name of a foreign exchange student who I knew no longer lived in the states. I never heard anything back.
Seriously though, fuck those things. Total money grab.

I got one in Washington DC, tried to refute it online, but just got a letter saying I'm liable. Does anyone know if these go on record or transfer to a different state?

If you don't live in the DMV area, your risk is less if you ignore it. If you do, they have reciprocity with the surrounding states to report delinquent photo tickets to prevent you from renewing your vehicle registration.

Outside of that, I seem to recall they may report the delinquent ticket to the credit bureaus.

I have read that if you are resident of DC, camera tickets do not go on record and add points. However, in other states if it transfers, it could add points. I'm in MA and speeding cameras are illegal here, so technically it can't transfer as a speeding ticket. I think if it transfers, it might come under a different citation code. Not sure, I might hire an attorney.

I guess it's state dependent. The first question is if MA has reciprocity with DC. If it doesn't, then all speculation is moot other than if DC moves to report this in your credit report or go through the process of collections.

With the surrounding states here, none of the photo enforcement tickets are moving violations. It's only a civil penalty fine. Therefore no entry into your driving record as the violation is pinned to the "car"; which falls on the registered owner.

Here in Chicago they are about $75 and they come with three in color pictures and a video. Watch the video sometimes we think we did not do anything wrong and when we see the video we realize we did. Pay it if you can because here if you don't it goes to your record and once you get a certain amount the city suspends your license

I've had two camera tickets mailed to me. Both images (toll road violations) were supposedly focused on my rear license plate. During the processing analysis, someone assumed the "F" on my plate was an "E" so I was erroneously tagged.

I took a photo of my plate (much more clear than theirs) and showed them the error of their ways. Ticket cancelled.
