If the area where it sank isn't seriously deep, it'll be interesting to see what kind of environmental issues this causes. I guess it depends on how many lithium batteries there actually were on that ship.

According to reports, 200 miles off the Azores. Looking at a sea floor map it appears that it's likely under 3-5000 meters of water. Not much out there.

Affirmative: the Felicity Ace cargo ship sank this morning at 9am local time 220 nautical miles off the coast of Portugal’s Azores Islands.

Nightmare for all parties and insurance companies involved.

I guess that also salvage teams will scratch their heads: it's a massive pile of melted rubble (fire ravaging for over a week) + filled fuel tanks for the trans-Atlantic journey, now lying kilometers below sea level.

Volkswagen had VW, Porsche, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini-branded models on the vessel, which was on its way to Rhode Island from Germany’s Emden port when the fire broke out on Feb. 16. The blaze is believed to have lasted more than a week after the Panama-flagged ship’s crew was evacuated and it was left adrift.
Tug boats and salvage craft accompanying the vehicle are in the area to monitor the situation, Adamson said.
“There doesn’t appear to be any oil pollution yet -- they’re checking on that,” the spokesperson said.
Volkswagen declined to comment on Tuesday. The German carmaker had feared that large numbers of its cars on the vessel would not be salvageable, with brands and dealers notifying customers that the U.S.-bound vehicles likely wouldn’t be delivered. Damage to the cars is covered by insurance, the automaker had said last week.
In a projection assuming all vehicles would be lost, the risk-modeling company Russell Group last week estimated that the incident could cost the automaker at least $155 million. Approximately $438 million worth of goods were aboard the ship, $401 million of which were cars."

The RennList "experts" immediately placed the cause on EV's but there's nothing to substantiate that. It's all nonsense. That fire could've started for any reason. For all we know, a disgruntled worker set the fire on purpose.

In early reports the ship's captain was quoted as saying they did not know what started it, but that there were EVs on fire by the time they evacuated. Pretty sure it was over at that point.
