I once had the opportunity to witness stuff exactly like this in the video in real-time. My high school history instructor, one day "invited" me and a couple other students (who would be considered high achievers) to sit-in on his remedial U.S. history class. They were talking about the Vietnam War that day. The students were saying all sorts of stuff in response to questions.
Q. Show me Vietnam on the map. A: The person points to mainland China. Q: Does anybody know anything about Vietnam? A: I think we're at war with them. Q: Who's the president now and when was he elected? A: Nixon, 1977. etc, etc. The instructor would asked others in the class if they agreed and many would say yes. This was in the 1980's. So it's not just only a recent phenomenon.
