You're not a killjoy. There are plenty of preventative measures in place for porn as well, but MANY children find a way around those things, and are not suddenly turned into rapists. I played a lot of Grand Theft Auto (and came across a lot of my dad's porno mags) in my formative years, and have yet to be inclined to murder a hooker with a shovel. The biggest difference, in my opinion, comes from teaching our children to be respectful, moral human beings.

Edit: I realize that you said porn is easily accessible, but the other things are nearly, if not just as easily, accessible by kids of that age.

All of this comes back to the objective nature of influence and the manner in which desires are materialized and processed.

Ok - my .02 on the porn debate above...

Sex is a natural act. A parent can try to shelter their children from images of this, wither it's porn or TV, or whatever medium is accessible, but a natural curiosity of sexuality will always begin to surface once puberty kicks in. What we ('old farts') consider too pornographic or violent for children when we were younger is widely acceptable and simply the 6:00 news today.

With the age of the internet - a 6 year old can google and youtube ANYTHING...

Porn is a business. Love is life. What some consider love, other may consider porn. It is not for me to judge.

As far as children and access to porn and violent games...I played fighting games up until mid to late 20's - and still have shooter games for my niece and nephew when they visit. They are perfectly sane and respectful kids.

IMO - Parents today struggle with how to talk with their children about these things because its so easily accessible. Back in the day - the talk was generally 'information' to help clarify confusion in kids about sex.

I am an advocate for gun ownership. I am not an advocate for violence and i do tend to believe that the amount of violence, gun or otherwise, portrayed on TV and in the movies does have an effect on our youth and the value placed on other people.

Some of the "whatever you want to put there" examples are solutions to real problems that also have the ability to create other problems. The reason porn exists is to treat personal emotional desires. I'm not sure a physician has ever prescribed consuming porn as a solution to someone's depression, pain, poor relationship, etc... Maybe a couples therapist has suggested watching or making some porn with their partner as a solution to a stagnant sex life. But in general i'm speaking about young guys and it's doubtful any Dr has suggested any teenage boy should consume an unchecked amount of different types of porn.

Are we talking about watching hours upon hours of porn each day or in a life time? Because all other things being equal, I'd wager these two people have vastly difference views of the opposite sex. I'd also venture a guess that the one consuming hours upon hours in a day or even a week started doing so to fill a void. Like so many other place fillers, porn also has a tendency to be addicting. In this case, it's been filling an emotional void and the viewer has become dependent on it. Where as the person who casually views porn a hand full of times each year likely isn't viewing it to fill a void in their life.

I agree, we can't blame porn for sexism in America. I mean after all, most boys treat women in close to the same manner in which their father treated their mother. Sadly, this doesn't give me much more hope for the future generations.
