Very cool. I'm hoping to catch some hummingbirds soon.

Hummingbirds are great fun to shoot. Get in close and don't show a feeder.

My wife and I have just been discussing another trip over to The Outer Hebrides, so we've been looking through a few images from our last visit.

This is taken on the grassy summit of Chaipaval, South Harris, looking all the way over towards Skye. The haar (mist) kept rolling in and obscuring the views, but when it cleared it was great.

Chaipaval 1 by Alan Butterfield, on Flickr

We've stood on some wonderful mountain tops in places all over the world, but looking at this, I can honestly say it rivals anything.

Super shot Alan.

When I was in Northern England, it was constantly raining, but I kept planning shots. I was often rewarded with a break in the clouds and magic sunlight showing through. I wore Gore-Tex and kept the camera ready. The leading and trailing edges of weather often has the very best light.

Looking forward to your next visit.

That's like the old joke about the Englishman telling his friend about his week's holiday in Scotland.

'It only rained twice', he said, 'once for 3 days and once for 4 days'.

Thanks Alan.

One secret I've found is try multiple times and if the moon looks sharp to the eye, then it's time to shoot. Yesterday, I took some pix 1.5-hours before this shot. As I was getting ready to go in, I took one more look at the moon, and it looked really crisp. I took four or five more shots and this one was the best exposure.

Most moon shots are not this sharp due to earth's atmosphere. It can change in a relatively short time. The angle in the sky matters, because, as it gets higher, you're shooting through less atmosphere.

There was a episode in Hawaii with a cow on the road a week ago.... it didn't end well. It became scared after people tried to "rescue" it.
Thanks Ed/Lenny/Carl for the recommendation. I just received my second Superfeeder ( where one is just not enough)

That thing has saved me many hours of sleep

They know the schedule and just camp in front of it waiting for it to go off instead of waking me up begging.

Poor Wifey gets woken up all the time by our Lenny/Carl lookalike. A Great Dane couldn't wake me up.

Cool moon shot, DC.

My first published (sort of) picture. This is the new Chemistry textbook our students will be using for the next 4 years or so. The publisher lets schools create custom covers, so our school chose this image, which I shot at a chemistry demo last summer. It's a chunk of pure potassium the instant it hit water. I get credit on the Copyright page, but no royalties as the image was shot with university equipment on university time and I'm a university employee. This was part of my normal duties. Still, nice to see one of my images someplace besides Flickr.

Excellent Mark.
My wife has a story about that experiment. Her lab partner didn't just drop in a sliver of Potassium but a chunk. They didn't find any pieces of the beaker afterwards.

Thanks, guys. I was using my 120-300 at 300mm and was a good 30ft away. The prof doing the demo told me to put on goggles, which made photography a bit difficult, but he insisted, even though I was that far away. The "blast" blew pieces of potassium past me. I was amazed. He used a piece about the size of a pea.

See if this GIF works.
