There are few things in life as cool as opening up a new camera box.

I'm amazed how quiet this thing is compared to the 7D.

Thanks Dave, good point about the clock exposure. I've been really lazy since I got my 6D as all I want to do is shoot, so I haven't processed a single image, just been posting them as is.

The 6D built-in HDR is fairly useless so I would do this in Photoshop anyway, probably with a layer for the clock from the short exposure.

That being said, in a "doh" moment I realized when I got home last night that I had been shooting in JPEG after fiddling with the built in HDR function, which requires that you set the camera to JPEG only in order to work.

Can't wait for Magic Lantern to fix this firmware crap!

So I will go back to reshoot The Clock Tower sometime soon and get some RAWs and multiple exposures while I am at it.

Since it is the snapshot thread...

Very true. Just wish there was something to shoot. Very cold and gray here. Desolate doesn't begin to describe it.

You're really finding all the angles for that bridge, Denn. These all from the same shoot?

Congrats on going FF.
But you haven't had the 7D for long have you?

No, and I'll be keeping it. I'm planning of going to the US F1 race next November and the 7D's AF will be handy then. Plus I still have a bunch of crop-only lenses I like.

I've been playing around with the 6D all morning. Couple things I hadn't thought about until now. You can't overlay a grid in the viewfinder like you can on a 7D. And even if you only use the center AF point, the others still show. Both of these issues are a result of having interchangeable focus screens, I believe. The 7D's screen is not interchangeable and uses a polymer LCD, which allows the grid overlay and the ability to hide unused focus points. Guess I need to get a gridded focus screen.

I love how quiet the shutter is, though. And the images are so detailed. 100% cropping is not an issue with the 6D. The wifi remote app is pretty cool, but I can't see myself using that too often. The ability to look at your images without taking the camera out of your bag is very cool and will come in handy. Otherwise the wifi on the camera and my droid will stay off. I'm psyched that I can now shoot at ISOs above 1600 and not worry too much about noise. That will come in handy for the evenings I'm bored at home and want to shoot the cats (photographically speaking, of course).

Now I need a nice sunny day to get some shooting done outdoors.

Just had an "Ah ha!" moment with the shot above. The back of the couch where the cat is sleeping is at an angle to me. I focused on his head between his ears and then recomposed to get him in the frame better. Even though the camera's focus was locked, the plane of focus shifted slightly when I recomposed because of the angle. You can see the pattern on the couch is sharply in focus while his head is slightly OOF.

I'll have to re-think focus and recompose when shooting at an angle like that. This may have been a case where having all the focus points available and the choosing the proper one would have worked better than focus and recompose.

Lots of low light fun with this camera.

ISO 12800 -Yes, there's a bit of noise, but you know what these images would have looked like if I'd used the 7D at that ISO?

Nice shots, Mark - and cute cats

The high ISO stuff is addicting on the 6D. As you said, there's noise, but it's clean and manageable unless you pixel peep or crop really small. I think the 6D ISO 12800 shots are good for 8x10 prints that would still look good, and the ISO 25600 would be good for 5x7 prints, maybe even slightly larger.

Here's one from last night with the 6D and 40mm Pancake, used the lens cap to prop the camera up on the curb for this long exposure (4 seconds):

100% crop from a 70-300L (reduced to 800x600 for posting).

It certainly works at "internet sizes".

Agreed. Nothing I'd blow up and print. It's a very gray day here, too, so the ISO was up. I think on a sunny day with faster SS, it would have been a bit sharper. Besides, for the most part, you don't depend on 100% crops for printable images. This was just a test to see how much better the 6D handles 100% over the 7D.

Pushing the limits further, here's a 25600 ISO shot. Now you can clearly see a loss of detail. I applied PP NR on the RAW files, saved it as a TIFF, then applied NR again on that. Again, web usable only, but leaps and bounds better than the 7D.

100% crop with 7D:

Untitled by dcstep, on Flickr

Shows a good bit of luminescence, but pretty sharp with benefit from a relatively low ISO 400. I have no idea what that distortion is to the left of the beak. It flew off as I was reaching for the 5D MkIII.

Your 70-200 F4L? For some reason it wants me to log into Yahoo to see your Flickr page.

Yes, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, an incredibly flexible lens with great IQ.

Please, by all means, join me on Flickr and say "hi" there.

It was -1-degree F here at sunrise. I had on my longjohns, gloves AND mittens. Luckily it wasn't windy, so I was quite comfortable. The seat warmers sure are nice in those circumstances.

My best shot from this morning:

Pretty mule deer doe in morning sun by dcstep, on Flickr

I brought the very strong shadows on the left up a little, added some Contrast and Vibrance, cropped to square and saved to jpeg. This is with the 5D MkIII, 500/f4 and 1.4X TC, hand-held out the window of the car-blind.
