Turned 54 this year. All my sons have left meaning I've lost my snow shoveler, lawn mower, take the garbage out kid. And I thought life would be easier once they left

I remember the first time I heard my Dad swear. My Dad never raised his voice at home. Never swore at home. Always the epitome of calm, even when he was mad. Then he took us to his job on a rare Saturday when he needed to be in. He worked at a trucking company and the fence to the yard was frozen shut by snow. He had us go into the control tower in the building so we could hit the open/close button when he told us to over the intercom from the gate. He had promised to buy us Dunkin' Donuts for helping him. So he's outside working with another guy trying to free up the gate and I asked him over the intercom if we were still going to get donuts. Then I heard him say to the other guy there, "Do you believe this fucking kid, always thinking about food?"
I was stunned. I'd never heard him swear before. (I was probably 12 y.o. then.) He didn't realize I heard him either. Later in life I learned that he was a terror at work and gave people no mercy if they were screwing up and not doing their jobs. I never saw that side of him my whole life.

Always preferred the M2. Of course I didn't have to carry it around. It was mounted on my turret ring.

When I was stationed in Korea my section sergeant "volunteered" us to test fire all the non-m16 weapons in the troop. We loaded up one truck with weapons and one with ammo and went up to a range near the DMZ. It was just the section sergeant, myself, and two other guys from my office. We spent the day firing M2s, M60s, .45 pistols, and M203 grenade launchers. One the better days of my life. And when we got back, there was another detail to clean the weapons. It didn't include us.

All my planning in life was for me to be dead by 55 at the latest, due to the diabetes. In August I'll only have 5 years left on the clock, so the kid better not waste any time in college if he wants me to buy him that car for graduation.
I still look forward to going to my dad's cabin and chopping wood and clear the snow from the driveway, the freezer is well-stocked with liquid pain meds, and you only need a wee dram when going from 12 to 6500 feet elevation. . . Wait, where ARE my pants??? |

The wife has enough life insurance on me to pay off the house. Not much more I can do at this point. |
