I fell in love with the E90 when it dropped... Now if they could have kept the E90 motor and stuck it in the F80 body, that’d be something

Wow the E36 doesn't get much love. Never drove one, but it is the car that drew me to the brand. Maybe one day I'll get one!

E46 is the biggest POS. vanos, subframe, all the other garbage that breaks on them. Still fat. horrible exhaust sound.

The worst tho is the absolutely delusional owners who thinks their 140,000 example with a bunch of taiwanese garbage mods is going to be $250k within the next 8 years.

IMO, the V8 was too heavy for that car, and the high hp/lower tq made for an engine less fun than the in-line six variants. Just my opinion, and yes, I did own one.
You know the V8 was lighter than the boat anchor S54 in the E46, right?

The S65 short block (no heads/cams/vanos/etc) is lighter than the S54 short block (which was the basis of BMW's misleading marketing claims), but the S54 long block (complete engine) is lighter than the S65 long block.

Thanks. That does challenge a lot of what I've read online which must be based on BMW marketing. I guess the only way to know is to weigh it and I found this article that supports what you've written in the comments. Makes me question what part(s) of an engine count when weighing it and what automakers are being consistent in how they report this

Now I'm not so sure I'd want one in my Z4 M has a dream build after all

P.S. guess linking to other forums is frowned upon. Google the URL path (A proper M3 engine swap) and you'll find it.

The S65 sounds heavenly but the E46 takes the cake for me.
