I don't think it is ugly. The front is pretty good and side view is great. The M2 look will be different from the rear with wider hips and tinted rear lights and additional bumper details.
That, the tech and performance that will be a step up from the F87 -- should not be written off this early...

Your resale value will not improve because of this car. Nobody's resale value will improve because of any of BMW's new ugly designs. To think otherwise is naïve. These are not special or limited cars. Their resale value is dictated solely by their age, mileage, model year and condition - it's as simple as that.

You got it! They are giving us soooo much with the M240i that they reserved those small design details for the G87.
I am certain the G87 will be an amazing machine loaded with design details and technology. Kind of like G8x over F8x step...

BMW makes tons of models with dual halo, they are allowed to deviate from that on some cars. Either way, after a while the same design gets boring and repetitive, I'm glad BMW has the balls to go against what enthusiasts want, enthusiasts are the death of a brand.
Wow you call my comment dumb.

Mine is based on what my eyes see. Angles all going against each other.

Sheets of black plastic on the front, rear and sills.

Rooflines that don't flow with the body.

Bulges here and there.

What evidence do you base your observations on?

I'm a car enthusiast first and foremost. A BMW fanboi yes and until the last couple of years wouldn't buy anything else.

I've owned several beamers and just sold my M3. Other than the odd/ugly looking M135i which I forgave as it was the only RWD hatch, I think all my other BMWs looked stunning.

I just don't like the new design language. Don't like the G8x and I don't like the new 2er.

You think the 2er looks better than the Emira?

Im lucky I have a good choice of cars for my next motor. I was considering a Porsche Cayman. Do I have bad taste?

These "real" photos help it a lot. Still not 100% sure about the rear but the body lines looking striking. I hated the G8X grill until I saw that in person, hope its the same case with this.

You clearly have not been closely following the BMW resale market for the last 10+ years. Ive been flipping used bmws for some time now. If you were right an identical condition e36 m3 would outsell an e46 or an e34 m5 would outsell a e39 m5 which in both cases is not true. No offense but you're completely wrong.

Can't help but be disappointed about that. As I wrote in the World Premiere thread, having seen this in YT vids I love the look. With what looks like the interior from the 4-Series, or close, they're really taking the 2-Series upscale and with the cool exterior cues like power dome hood and M-like mirrors, the limited slip and great engine this would be an unbeatable package at the price point. But it's disappointing that the MT is gone for all but the M cars. I know the standard response is that it's all about take-rate and profits, but this is the one area where I thought BMW might say take-rate be damned and keep the MT just for brand perception.

I wanted it to be good since it would get the s58, arguably the best M motor, but seeing as how pretty much every M shares the same front and rear light designs as the non-m its already off to a bad start in terms of the m version.

The concept was beautiful. Ruined some where along the way.

Really the sin was 3800 lbs and bigger than an E9x. Shameful!!

And it will be just a touch cheaper than an RS3. It's not going to be a winner and bmw will make the next one FWD citing the S3/RS3 success.

The M235i is just pathetic in comparison though.

The dream is over. BMW is officially a new company with new goals.

A bit cartoonish/over-styled but it is what it is, that's the running theme with the G-chassis cars. We will just have to get used to it.

Purple is a terrible color for this car. I'd argue the only BMW purple ever worked on was the E36. The blue looks much nicer.

Frank Stephenson, considered "one of the most influential automotive designers of our time" said in a recent video that BMW's current design language is "chaotic". Seems to sum it up.

Hope he does a video on the G42

Never been inside a 2 series. Are the back seats completely unusable like the pics make them seem to be?

I'm not sure what changes happened back at HQ but man it feels like we are in the era of German designers paying homage or borrowing design elements from the eastern world and it used to be the other way around. Maybe I'm just getting older or who knows what but this new era of BMW is separating itself from its roots…imo

Kia/ Hyundai etc… all stole looks from Mercedes bmw Audi and some of them put all 3 on one car and now if someone told me this was a Kia or Hyundai trying to compete with the new supra I would believe it.

Now that is just on the exterior department. Interior looks good and I'm sure it drives well.
It's not German designers, it's just designers from all over the world that work their as you can see from this nice little bit of info.....

https://www.bmwgroup.com/en/innovation/design.html

Now if you want to blame the few at the top go right ahead as they are the ones that steer the design. .

Yeah you are right can't really blame the designers who pitch the concept.
You can't as the directors tell them what they want to see and they give it to them. Remember theirs tons and tons of ideas, and hundreds of sketches on the wall. A sketch can look great as a sketch but then falls apart as a real 3d object.

The management looks over the concepts and can gloss over fantastic designs in favor of some odd balls.

Theirs never one sketch.

Design in itself can be subjective so theirs no right or wrong.

We as designers try and find what the management want. We pitch them out ideas sure but at the end of the day no concept goes anywhere unless the big guys want it. You want change you change the top. GM has some
Of
The greatest designers in the world yet they create things that are less than stellar. Every studio is different to a degree but in the end the directors and management have to make the call. Do you work in a design studio?

Everyone seems to be an expert!

The Kia head of design was an American who went to school and designed the Cadillac evoke and later went and worked for Audi, before leaving and working at Kia. I had the pleasure of meeting him before he graduated when I was a freshman.

He recently passed however, so sad as he was a great guy and had a great eye.

I don't need to work in a design studio to be able to use my eyes and look at a 3D object and be able to tell if things don't look right and/or are pleasing. And yes I know looks are subjective but if there is controversy there's a reason. No one looks at 458 Italia and says man what the fuck were the designers thinking here.

It's pretty clear that this and the g80 are stepping stones for what bmw has in hold for the future…. and if that's the direction then you can count me out on purchasing any new BMW. But who cares about my opinion the target audience for these cars arent made for convincing people to get rid of or in addition to the e30/36/9x and it's for the young and new with money and majority of those ppl do not have experience with the "classics".

To each their own tho I couldn't care less if everyone on the forums are buying 2 of them, I like what I like.
