Well nothing has changed since July other than one of the worlds largest lithium reserves has fallen into the hands of a non-Western, retrograde society. One of the arguments against ICE by proponents of the Green Society is getting off the conflict mineral train that is crude oil. Now we only hop into another mineral conflict. Lovely.

But the problem still remains the physics and chemistry in relationship to lifecycle cost. After searching for over 100 years, no mineral has proven as energy dense per kilogram as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel for transportation applications. IMO, the problem to solve is to develop mechanical apparatus that burn and convert the energy in those fuels more efficiently. I like the idea of a hybrid system that has relatively efficient on-board conversion of lightweight carbon fuel to electricity that then takes advantage of the benefits of an electric drivetrain.

Unfortunately, again the issue is political, burning carbon-based fuel is being banned by most Western civilizations.

The notion that EV's will solve the worlds GHG problems is a dream. I think the climate activists are ignoring the issues with mining of the rare earth minerals for the batteries, the coming costs with updating the grid to supply the electricity, the loss of revenue from Gas Tax and all the associated costs. I don't see myself buying one anytime soon but I guess time will tell.
Tesla battery will last for 300,000 - 500,000 miles.

Interesting article on the steps government is going to have to take to offset the loss of gas tax. Oregan and Utah are already charging EV owners an annual fee on top of what other fees they pay. There are always consequences to every action.

This is the big elephant in the room, not so much in the USA as their taxes are laughable but places like EU, Australia, Canada.....50% of the cost of gas is tax. That's one HELL of a revenue stream to let go of.

Well one of my work associates' son (he was eating lunch with Rachel Scott) was paralyzed by the two assholes, Harris and Klebold; so to me it's a bit closer to home than some fuck-ass old washed up ignorant auto mechanic's joke. The incident broke up the man's marriage and has affected his entire life since, let alone his son is left paralyzed. But hey, let's laugh about it...

That was a tough article to read since it was Canadian based but discussed U.S. gas taxes at the State level. Considering the US take-up rate on EV is still less or around 2% of the market and Canada is at 3%. I'm really not seeing an issue here and for anyone to make a claim EVs are affecting gas tax revenues at this point in time.

A mileage-based fuel tax will just be a money grab for the politicians. The Feds already suck up 18.4 cents per gallon on top of State gas taxes. I'd argue the gas tax should be a computed as a sales tax, rather than based on unit of measure. If a mileage-based tax is instituted then it should only apply to EV. Big-data Tesla knows exactly how many miles each of its cars drive per year.

You should have seen what he had to say about cars when they were 2% of the vehicles on the road 98% were the horse and buggy. Cars will never catch on! You need to refuel them with expensive refined oil. You can just feed a horse grass from anywhere!

Good comparison. Question for you flypenfly - why did cars catch on relative to horses? Serious question.

Have no fear about tax revenue relative to ICE shift to EV.

All governments do what governments do best - generate revenue.

Government revenue will be generated, ICE or no ICE.

In the long run, they won't go mainstream. They've been around for over 100 yrs. and they haven't gained much traction and they won't. They're a fad. People by them only because they're the newest coolest thing, just like some other car models. When it's being forced on people, people will turn away from them.

How long is this fad going to last? Model S was introduced 10 years ago now. More EV's are coming, some brands have stated they will be full EV by 2030.

Just sounds like German car fans saying Lexus would never be a threat. Always fun to pretend things won't change.
