The heat must have weakened the hull to the point where it breached and I'll go with the theory that an EV battery igniting likely caused this scenario.
That said all the crew should be interviewed to see where they were and what they were doing at the time the first signs of the blaze was discovered.

Unfortunately the investigatory aspect of this incident ended when the vessel sank.

Of course and even if it would have still been floating, this being a billion dollar? loss I would still want to question the cargo crew.

You better believe that crew is going to be questioned A LOT! This kind of shit doesn't happen every day.

Yes, but the potential for a forensic investigation is done. They'll never know what caused that fire. They'll obtain statements from the crew and that'll be the end of it.

That ship was bound for the east coast. My car is still at the port of Emden awaiting a vessel bound for the west coast. Phew!
…buuuuuut she left the port yesterday on the Glovis Sigma en route to California. Fingers crossed she makes it without a fire, rough seas or a Russian missile taking her out.

According to what I read it started listing heavily to starboard in rough seas and rolled over. Likely what was left of the cargo started shifting - after all, the tie-down straps would've been the first things to go - which caused the instability. You can see a large open area above the waterline, and maybe another all the way to further forward. Once those openings started taking on water, it was pretty much over, I think.

As to cause, we will likely never know, although there are no doubt a couple of insurance companies who would REALLY like to know. While there have been a few fires on these vehicle carriers over the years, I haven't been able to dig up any on new car roll-on/roll-off carriers that were caused by vehicles catching fire. The fact that a growing percentage of cars being shipped are EVs is definitely a concern for the industry, and will no doubt raise shipping/insurance costs.

I see it was registered in Panama where a lot of them seem to be, also Liberia.

To make matters worse, the Porsche Leipzig factory is now closed until end of next week due to conflict in Ukraine.

On a somewhat related matter (maybe), there have been cyber attacks hitting automotive related companies including a Toyota supplier. We are probably just scratching the surface on what's to come.

Except 2x in 3 yrs if you're Porsche.

I mean it's one hell of a way to.assist the dealers with the "exclusivity" and limited production pitch.

The ship itself was a Ro/Ro. Is that close enough?

I've had nearly this exact call before, but minus one sword and add in the PCP.

Now THAT I would dive for. They haven't been on shelves for at least 5-6 months.
