Shane, I'm not really sure what you could have done in that situation. The light is really hard and contrasty. You were up at ISO 12,800. At that high ISO, you don't have much room to manipulate Shadows and Highlights in post and this picture needs a lot of both.
For my nature shooting, I'm keenly aware of light quality and direction. You seem to be shooting in the early afternoon here. If you could have gotten around to the other side, that would have helped some. This feeder seems right by a building, so light later in the evening may not reach it. One thing about hummers and feeders, they tend to land on nearby trees to rest and observe. I always look for that. You had a nice interaction here, but the light was killer.

The light was so good this morning, I couldn't resist taking a picture of my M3, in its eighth year:

I have a few other venues around town for some hummingbirds and I'll have to actually set up a tripod. I shot these standing without support and was trying to do my best to manually focus in on them. I'm thinking I could have cranked down the ISO, I'm not sure why I had it so high looking back on it. On the other side of the house they were in front of a screen and that made the definition extremely hard to pin point, but I think this one and one other from that side were my best bet. So here's my other attempt, probably should have played a bit more with the settings and nabbed some more shots, definitely not used to the digital aspect of things yet I appreciate the input as always, I'll see what I can do for a darker background and some variation in settings in the future. Shane, I find that AF works best for hummingbirds. They're usually very tolerant of humans, so you can sit down ten or twelve-feet away, wait fifteen minutes and they should come in.
As for shutter speed, I find that 1/3200-sec. is a nice compromise speed that give a slight wing blur and stops the bird's body. Also, shutter speeds are high enough to ditch the tripod. Here's 1,000mm hand held at 1/2000-sec., f/8.0 and ISO 800, in good light: Approaching a flower by David Stephens, on Flickr

Mark, some great shots of Fountains Abbey, nice memories of happy times living and working in Yorkshire for many years.
JMG - that's a beautiful night storm shot. I've just looked at it on Flickr and there's a lot more fabulous detail in the sky that could be brought out. Dave - your M3 is looking good, wearing well.

LA's newest attraction. You can slide down a glass tube suspended out over downtown LA near the top of the tallest building in town.

Lost the edit I did of this, so I had to redo it. Think I'll probably get this one printed/fractured too!

Nice shot, Darrick. Since it would be an easy fix, I think I'd take out that wire on the side of the pagoda, though.

I'd also check for true vertical. I think it may need 1 or 2-degree rotation CC.

Looking straight up in the glass elevator in the new Broad Museum in Los Angeles. Very cool building.

True Vertical Corrected (I think) and wire removed! Updated in original post.

https://www.fractureme.com - they do photos on glass. I bought one already and I really like it. I plan on doing a set of them. Last edited by justanotherdude; 07-07-2016 at 08:42 AM.. |

Thanks buddy. Will do. I'm ordering at least one test print to see what the wife thinks.

Thanks. Used the code and saved $10. Still, they ripped me a new one on the shipping cost.
