That’s fine, you can make that argument. I have no idea why they use electronic doors instead of mechanical, I’m sure there’s a reason that may or may not be good, I just don’t know what it is.

My point is it’s not an issue isolated to EVs and it’s not something I personally worry about. I personally would not opt out of buying a car (EV or ICE) because it has electronic doors. You may and that’s your choice. Then again I’m also not one to check crash test ratings of cars I buy either so maybe I just like living on the edge.

Also just because you have a mechanical door doesn’t mean you will be able to open it in a crash. That’s why the jaws of life exist. So you should probably have a backup plan to get out of your car regardless. Maybe have one of those seatbelt cutters/window breakers.

I have no horse in the race but cannot fathom why EV's need to be so ...... applefied. Just build a regular car with proper controls, that runs on a battery, why fuck about and electrify things that work WORSE than analog interfaces?

Electric doors are absolutely and utterly insane, no fucking idea why you'd do that. I don't get it.

Teslas… yes 100% applefied. That being said IMO that’s one of their selling features.

However I’m not sure how most other EVs are applefied any more than modern ICE vehicles. Have you seen the new Lincoln Navigator with that ridiculous screen than spans the entire dash? Pretty much every modern car now has a giant screen and a lot of have digital gauge clusters with few if any physical buttons.

Tesla's have a mechanical door release which is right where most cars would have the door release handle...most new passnengers use it to open the door as it is instinctual...I often have to remind new passengers to hit the button(electric release) instead of the mechanical release handle because it drops the frameless window as opposed to the mechanical release which does not.

I'm aware of that, I also am aware (video attached above few posts back) that some of the manual releases are located in the well at the bottom of the rear passenger door. I'll say it once more. The electronic release might be really cool but the fact that it needs a secondary manual over ride for emergencies seems counterintuitive given the way many people react in stressful situations.

It's the Lincoln Nautilus that has the mega-screen, but point taken. My brother has one, I'm pretty sure the doors are mechanical cables.

Jaws of life most likely mean the driver/passengers are seriously injured regardless and couldn't open the door. But my example of the kids almost getting cooked inside the Mach E draws the line for me. But my most modern vehicle (2022) has removable doors, so what do I know. 🤣🤣🤣

It's not the same though, opening the door electronically has zero advantage, none, it is no easier for the user, if anything it is HARDER so why do it?

They use frameless windows so when you do it electronically, the window has time to drop down before it gets pushed open so it doesn’t damage the gasket.

This is what I read also. However I’m pretty sure my Miata does the same thing with mechanical opener. So did my Z4MR. I’m not with the Miata to verify but I’m guessing it drops the window once the door unlocks either with the fob or door handle.

It's not like it conserves battery power using the electronic doors, you'd think that with an EV the main driver is to maximize range by using less battery power.

This is exactly how I feel about unconventional doors on cars. It’s about a perceived cool factor. The thing is you gain more respect for conventional designs after living with unconventional ones for any given period of time.

My car has also frameless windows that drop down when pulled by a mechanical handle... they also don't mess up the trim when frozen solid and can't lower.

It isn't rocket appliances.

If door handles are what we are left with in the Tesla complaints department then I declare full Tesla victory.

Tell that to the young woman who burned to death in a Tesla because of the electronic door handles.

The article Murf linked to was pay walled. This morning, I found another source for the incident. A quote from that article:

"Calgary Fire Department Captain Randy Schmitz also pointed out that in a crash, power can fail, causing severe difficulty unlocking the doors. Nevertheless, the car involved in the blazing accident last month—the Tesla Model Y—is also believed to have a manual override button. However, experts say that the less publicised feature may not be easy to locate in an anxiety-inducing situation."

Four people died in the crash. Apparently all were trying to get out of the Model Y. "Harper had been driving his tractor-trailer full of mail when he happened upon the immediate aftermath of the accident. When he pulled his rig over, he saw a handful of young men who were "frantically" pounding on its back passenger window of the burning car."

That's not victory.

Checking into this thread for the first time in a few months. So now that Trump has been elected, what will happen to the EV market, and the broader ICE market? He said he'd end the Federal EV mandate, whatever that is, on Day 1. I think he also said he'd push out CAFE stuff also. Wonder if he'll be gutting the EPA?
