Somewhat bemused at these posts in the 3 series forum.

Wherever I go, I have a nigerian dwarf (his name is "Wallet") carry 100k in currency in a brief case and travel with a security team of ex-SEAL and ex-Speznaz. I car pool them all in my 3 series to save gas.

I don't worry about reservations, since my security (I call them "concierge") will remove anyone who dares sit where I want to go.

No need to line up in my socks in the "first class" express line to get felt up by some guy in a Turban who has used the same glove all week. I fly everywhere exclusively in my Ford Trimotor. Only 9 previous owners! 2 in Tajikistan!

Because you get points and other benefits like warranty, security, perks etc... that you do not get with a debit card.

I think thats only in europe where they use the chips. I use to make fun of my friend because i never heard of a plastic black card, and I was always like that a fake credit card. But he was like really then he showed me the emails on his blackberry. Plus his card didnt have a chip in it, then i showed him mine and he said that the titanium ones are only in america and europe uses the "red card". But my dad's friend in london had the titanium black card, so im not sure what amex does overseas but I know my credit card is the titanium one and useless at the same time

Your right, my family and I traveled to Europe and British Airways lost our bags and Amex insured your bags, with the membership fee that we pay. We got all of our money back that we payed for the lost items in the bag

Any credit card would cover lost bags. But Amex will definitely make it easier by no questions asked

Am I doing something wrong or are you not checking your statement for your annual fee? In other words I call bullshit
When I originally received the invite it said no annual fee. And that was not just for the first year. I spend over 100k a yr on it, but that's irrelevant since they had no way of knowing what I would spend. Nothing to prove on my part so raise the bs flag till your arm drops

I had platinum fees waved

I've had amex platinum fees waved year after year based on annual spending... just have to have high spend, be firm, and grumble about moving your spending elsewhere.

That tactic wont work with a centurion card...been there tried that...

I have two amex cards - to get an invite, do you have to spend ONLY on the Plat card (I use the plat for work and other for personal)?

...depends on type of cards

WangTA,

That depends on what type of Amex accounts you have. If both cards are 'charge' cards (credit card spending is not considered), and if the accounts are tied to your social security #. The combined spending would be considered for an invite (although you may have to call them to prompt the invitation, versus it being automated if spending in proper categories was meet on a single account).

...from what I have read over on flyertalk from recent recipients & people striving for a cent card its a real hit or miss for an invitation. Lots of people with stellar credit & meeting the spending requirement being rejected when asking for an invitation. Nobody knows the true secret formula used for centurion card invitations outside of the generalized $500K minimum annual spend, 1...or is it 2 years of being an amex charge card account holder...I think that's pretty much all amex has disclosed for qualification criteria. I have a suspicion that your billing zip code may also factor into your invitation.

As I said earlier, if you channel your spending properly through an amex charge card...any 6 figure earning professional can manipulate their profile into getting a centurion invitation.

Revolving line of credit - with the Austrailan interest rates typically above 8% that alone worth $30000 a year - and that's on all credit cards. For the amex the most important, other benefits are points - I didn't have to pay for a single air ticket last year for any of my holidays.

With a debit card the money get taken out straight away from your account and you are no longer earning interest.

They wave my personal charge card as I already have two business cards which I pay for. Tried that on the centurion and they wouldn't do it .

No one knows how they work. I haven't been spending much on my personal card last year. Although, I have been flashing the card all round the world in hotels, restaurants, and BMW. I always have high business usage, but never got an invite till now.

My brother travels even more often and even put more on his cards, and he hasn't got an invite. The Cent card is actually going to benefit his line of work as he needs to flaunt his wealth to attract more customers. While I don't need to and rather not catch the attention.

However, the extra points (in Aus, points work slightly differently) will only pay for a business class ticket, and that just barely covers the cost and I honestly struggle to use up all my points, especially my wife is expecting.

How much do you need to spend on the Platinum card a year to get an invite in Australia?

Honestly, I'm not sure how you can survive without a credit/charge card. You simply cannot use a debit card for everything.

Debit cards can't be used at hotels, car rental agencies, or airlines without significant hassle and most banks limit transactions to $1k or $2k per business day (with Sat/Sun counting towards Monday's limit).

I guess if you don't travel at all or only once a year then you might be able to deal with the hassle of only having a debit card.

Not to mention all the extra benefits others have mentioned that credit/charge cards provide.

And the fact that credit/charge cards help build credit so you can get things like mortgages...

84% of millionaires are self-made millionaires and didn't inherit the money. Just a nice little statistic for those wondering why some of those millionaires are driving Hyundais.
