gots to go to work...
quick story, march of 2011 we had a big snow storm. Had about a 3.5 foot ridge of snow at the end of my driveway. after snowblowing for an hour I was able to get out and head down the road. While driving I noticed there were very few cars on the road. Got to work and found out there was a state of emergency and no one was supposed to be on the streets! Only me and 2 other employees got to work that day. But patients showed up...

I used to live in the northwest but live in the southern Rockies now. The wet nw snow is WAY WAY slicker than what I've experienced here or in ohio I will agree that many have no clue how to drive in slick conditions. Once near Santa Barbara there was about a quarter inch of hail. I saw a car on its ROOF every mile for 9 miles! They were mostly 4x4's |

With you being in a finance position, I would think you could telecommute when necessary. Of course, the attitude towards working remotely can also be company specific. It seems some companies/managers only believe you are working if they can physically see you.

Bingo. We have the capabilities to work remotely but he doesn't count that as work.

You also said they put salt down on Tuesday but the roads were a sheet of ice on Thursday morning. That's two days by my calculation.

of all places, power/chemical plants hold safety as their #1 priority at all times... unless people in Alabama have a much different definition of safety..... Houston is power plant/chemical plant capital of the nation - you won't see any plant managers or operators demanding their employees drive through brutal weather conditions to get to work. |

other only go 10-15 miles...... and a very small number of people travel 4 or 5 miles to work..... odds are, there are enough people that live within the 5-15 mile mark to show up to work.... I have a fairly "short" ride to work at only 21 miles - people I talk to say "you're lucky to live so close to work" lol...... 80% of the plants in the Houston area are in east Houston (Pasadena), but not everyone lives in that shithole of a place HAHA !!!! |

What some, mostly northern's, do not realize about the Greater Atlanta area population, over half are not from the region. In fact, a good portion are from the Northeast and Midwest. Guess they were kicked out for not knowing how to drive in inclement weather.
The forecast for my area was a dusting to an inch. We got three inches of snow mixed with ice. I was at the office on Tuesday and sent my employees home at 11:30 AM, right when it started coming down as I could see it was going to be more significant. I also drove my Volt; leaving the M3 in the garage. Good idea as the Volt had difficulty at times but still managed admirably. Ran the charge down quickly though with the temps and trying to heat the cabin. The gas engine cut on and off periodically to assist. I left the office at just before 3:00 PM and it took 2.5 hours to go the 6 miles home all on back roads. Many of the issues I witnessed were due to people being selfish; blocking intersections, driving down turning lanes and then cutting others off, etc. There was certainly a lack of communication between the various governments. But in the end, it just sucked and was a terrible experience which we can learn from. Unfortunately now, with the slightest risk of frozen precipitation, everything will close even sooner. |

So we are gearing up for a snowstorm tuesday night through wednesday. Could be as much as 11 inches of snow before it's all done. In preparation I will be setting my alarm clock 1 hour early so I can snow blow and then have time to shower before going to work. Just another day in NY...

...even the vacation time... contractors and/or employees working in the oil/gas business can't just bill the client hours for not coming into work - I mean, because you essentially didn't do any work... whoever feels it's not safe to come into work, won't. it's as simple as that, but don't expect to put 8 or 10 hours on your timesheet for NOT coming in those hours..... |
