gots to go to work...

quick story, march of 2011 we had a big snow storm. Had about a 3.5 foot ridge of snow at the end of my driveway. after snowblowing for an hour I was able to get out and head down the road. While driving I noticed there were very few cars on the road. Got to work and found out there was a state of emergency and no one was supposed to be on the streets! Only me and 2 other employees got to work that day. But patients showed up...

I'll have to disagree with that. Winter tires make a HUGE difference on ice

I used to live in the northwest but live in the southern Rockies now. The wet nw snow is WAY WAY slicker than what I've experienced here or in ohio

I will agree that many have no clue how to drive in slick conditions. Once near Santa Barbara there was about a quarter inch of hail. I saw a car on its ROOF every mile for 9 miles! They were mostly 4x4's

With you being in a finance position, I would think you could telecommute when necessary. Of course, the attitude towards working remotely can also be company specific. It seems some companies/managers only believe you are working if they can physically see you.

Bingo. We have the capabilities to work remotely but he doesn't count that as work.

The storm hit late Tuesday night and they dropped the salt mix Tuesday morning/afternoon from what I saw. Where did you get 2 days from? Maybe my math is off...

It was also 2 degrees this morning when I left the house at 9. It's been in the teens here as well recently. Read the post above for what is used here. We don't use the same chemicals you guys use because we barely use it at all.

I know it's fun to pretend like it's a joke and make fun of everyone from the south, but it's all about perspective. There is a world outside of New England... Hell I'm not even from the south, but I've lived enough places to know that everything is a little different everywhere else in the world.
I was talking about Atlanta where this "apocalypse" occurred. They got 2.6" of snow.

You also said they put salt down on Tuesday but the roads were a sheet of ice on Thursday morning. That's two days by my calculation.

The storm started Tuesday evening at about 5 or 6 here. They did not salt the roads two days prior to the start of the storm. You said earlier :

Quote:
Dropping salt 2 days before a storm will obviously have no effect. Just-before or at-inception application is required for it to be effective.
That's exactly what happened... After they dropped the salt, there was maybe about 5-6 hours of just clouds before it started sleeting then turned to all snow. There would have only been 2-3 hours but the sleet started later than expected. So essentially it was dropped right before the start of the storm, but that should have worked, right?

Very old school way of thinking. Inherently means there is no trust in the workplace. I don't see you working means you're not working.

that's not a requirement...

of all places, power/chemical plants hold safety as their #1 priority at all times...

unless people in Alabama have a much different definition of safety.....

Houston is power plant/chemical plant capital of the nation - you won't see any plant managers or operators demanding their employees drive through brutal weather conditions to get to work.

like I mentioned in a previous post - some people have to travel 30-40 miles to get to work on occasion.

other only go 10-15 miles......

and a very small number of people travel 4 or 5 miles to work.....

odds are, there are enough people that live within the 5-15 mile mark to show up to work....

I have a fairly "short" ride to work at only 21 miles - people I talk to say "you're lucky to live so close to work" lol......

80% of the plants in the Houston area are in east Houston (Pasadena), but not everyone lives in that shithole of a place HAHA !!!!

What some, mostly northern's, do not realize about the Greater Atlanta area population, over half are not from the region. In fact, a good portion are from the Northeast and Midwest. Guess they were kicked out for not knowing how to drive in inclement weather.

The forecast for my area was a dusting to an inch. We got three inches of snow mixed with ice. I was at the office on Tuesday and sent my employees home at 11:30 AM, right when it started coming down as I could see it was going to be more significant. I also drove my Volt; leaving the M3 in the garage. Good idea as the Volt had difficulty at times but still managed admirably. Ran the charge down quickly though with the temps and trying to heat the cabin. The gas engine cut on and off periodically to assist. I left the office at just before 3:00 PM and it took 2.5 hours to go the 6 miles home all on back roads.

Many of the issues I witnessed were due to people being selfish; blocking intersections, driving down turning lanes and then cutting others off, etc. There was certainly a lack of communication between the various governments. But in the end, it just sucked and was a terrible experience which we can learn from. Unfortunately now, with the slightest risk of frozen precipitation, everything will close even sooner.

So we are gearing up for a snowstorm tuesday night through wednesday. Could be as much as 11 inches of snow before it's all done. In preparation I will be setting my alarm clock 1 hour early so I can snow blow and then have time to shower before going to work. Just another day in NY...

As in required to go in to work, I meant I could work from home but it doesn't count as working. IE, can't see me so I'm not working as stated before. Safety is the #1 priority here, and I'm guessing upper management determined it was safe to come into work and then send us home after some got here. No one demanded we come in, but they stated that we would have to use vacation time if we deemed it wasn't safe to drive on the roads. I didn't want to use my vacation time (new grad, not many vacation hours) so I decided I would try to see if I could make it in. But, if I had determined that it wasn't safe to drive I would have stayed home.

Yes, Farley.
That's some of the dumbest sh*t I've read in a long time. It's dangerous to come into work, so if you stay home, even though you are FULLY capable working from home, they would count it as vacation time?

Another work environment where there is zero trust in the employees. Awful.

I agree with all of that...

...even the vacation time...

contractors and/or employees working in the oil/gas business can't just bill the client hours for not coming into work - I mean, because you essentially didn't do any work...

whoever feels it's not safe to come into work, won't. it's as simple as that, but don't expect to put 8 or 10 hours on your timesheet for NOT coming in those hours.....

my employees in Des Moines told me that they are expecting up to 8 inches with wind. Of course, if the roads get closed for whatever reason, they can work from home, otherwise I'm sure they will all be at the office Wednesday morning. Thankfully, I'm going to AZ to play golf for a week; it's good to be the boss.
