Nice squirrel catch Dave. In California we have eastern fox and eastern gray squirrels which are non-native and now dominate the urban areas. Below is our only native squirrel species, the western gray which is mostly found in wooded / scrub areas. Looking at the tail, a very healthy individual!

Wonderful squirrel portrait, Terry.

I grew up with the gray squirrel, in North Florida. The fox squirrels are considerably larger.

Is your subject squirrel closer in size to Eastern gray or fox?

Both the eastern and western gray squirrels are about the same size and not up to the size of a fox squirrel.

For this one, I was quietly sitting down, my eye to the camera while waiting for birds. It felt like someone was watching me, looked to my right and the squirrel was ~6ft away from me sitting down and quietly staring. A bit unnerving since I'm the one usually doing the stalking!

Here's LNER K1 loco 62005 hauling The Jacobite from Fort William to Mallaig on the West Highland Line.
This image shows it storming up the 1 in 48 gradient on Beasdale Bank. The gradient, and associated reverse curves, is quite a challenge for any steam loco, but 62005 and her crew managed it well.

First day out with the Rx10. It's going to take some time to get used to the auto-focus. I can't seem to focus on things like clouds or the moon in a blue sky. And trying to grab a clean shot of a turkey vulture was hard. Lots of focus hunting. I guess it's just a matter of getting the settings right and practicing. Mr. Squirrel was a much easier target.

I only go to "Wide Tracking" (it may be "Lock-On" with the Rx10) for birds against a clear sky. My default seems to be "Center Tracking". If you use "Flexible Point Tracking", then you need to recenter by hitting the joy stick; otherwise, the AF point may be on the edge of the EVF, where you just finished tracking something. All that's with the a9 and a7RIII, but I think that the Rx10 is similar. Ed has the Rx10, so he'll probably contribute.

Try Center Tracking for starters. The Sony menu provides lots of adaptability, but also, plenty of ways to screw up.

Thanks, DC. I looked at my settings and adjusted accordingly. I'm sure it's just a matter of familiarization and practice. I don't expect the RX10 to duplicate a 5DIV and EF 500mm F4, but I'm hoping it can be a reasonably competent single-camera option for travel.

Mark, for anything moving, I almost always have the MKIV set to Continuous (the "c" on the front dial) and focus area set to "wide" using the fn button on the back. The AF algorithm is scarily good at figuring out what I am trying to focus on 95% of the time. For the other 5% I switch to Lock-on Expand Flexible Spot. It nailed Smokey pretty good here from clear across my back yard:

Cruising into the week. I'm still surprised that my 5 year canon t3i with a stock lens is still doing pretty well. Hopefully will upgrade soon. Debating going mirror less

Edit: yes I noticed the blemish right under the car, must've been something on the lens

Not bad with high ISO, either. This is 6400 at full zoom. It handles 6400 better than my 7D MkII.

Thanks Dave. I just pre-ordered the 200-600. As much as I would like the 600f4, that is just more coin than I am willing to spend on a hobby at the moment

I'll probably sell the 400mm when my 600mm comes in. I've got the capital to hold it, so I'll see much I actually use it during deer season, but I suspect that I'll sell it.

That 200-600mm is an incredible deal.
