yes, reliability and high maintenance costs are a big concern and this was a great way to get into a BMW and the maintenance was covered during most of the loan period. Again, BMW is no longer leading, just following other manufacturers. There is less and less every day that sets them apart. pretty soon people will see that the emperor has no clothes.

No bueno BMW! I could see shortening the length of the service program but keeping all services in place (i.e. brakes and wipers). This makes me wonder what they will attempt to charge on the back end for those that are interested in paying for the additional year etc.....

As a side note. Didn't BMW reconfigure the CBS algorithm for MY 2015, to coincide with the non-transferable service warranty? I only ask as I've had two oil services performed based on CBS data on our 428 with another due around 20,000 miles.

Free maintenance is *very* rare in the UK, you can buy two different 'service inclusive' packages from the dealer to cover your BMW if you want but no obligation to. Also you guys still have your warranty which isn't affected, me thinks the lady doth protest too much.
BMW Sweden offers 3 years/80 000km free maintenance too. You get that on quite a lot of brands these days.

News to me. Although, I can't exactly say I look at every DCS. I'm a simple man; RO says engine oil service, I do engine oil service.

No big deal here.

If you can't afford wiper blades or brakes for a BMW then your financial priorities are not in sync.

I'm sure they will offer a service plan for people who finance a BMW and who will keep more than 3 years.

Because many people take 15k leases and when you are returning a car that you don't own, you don't want to put money into a major cost like brakes or a clutch. Although I have to imagine your brakes in most cases should not need replacement anyway and you shouldn't go through a clutch either. But it is nice to know that everything is covered.

I don't think I'd not purchase a BMW as a result but from a brand perspective I think it's a bad move. Like said before in most cases it doesn't cost them anything more (except maybe an oil change) so why lose the ability to market the benefit?

On my wife's Volvo we were given 5 year/60k maintenance free and it definitely weighted into our decision as that was a buy and I didn't fully trust volvo's long term reliability. We ended up getting our brakes changed (and they did rotors and pads) right at 59k miles which was great as it will take us up to when we sell the car.

This thread has yielded a lot of healthy discussion about an important topic.

I said I didn't like the change and I don't. From a business perspective I totally understand it. BMW's real competition is not offering 4 years free maintenance. BMWs sell real well in countries where BMW does not offer free maintenance so they know that people buy BMWs regardless.

Some of the posts say the bean counters are at work or the executives will get extra profits or BMW is cost cutting. I mentioned that it is the BMW executives' duty to maximize shareholder profit. I'm not being a blind pro-BMW loyalist here. BMW is a company Its their job to do these things. BMW knows there are some that will be pissed over this move. It's part of their job to figure out how many they will lose and if that risk is worth taking. They know exactly what they are doing.

I suppose out of the emotion of it all, a bit of misinformation is being thrown around. Someone mentioned that BMW is a private company so there are no shareholders. This is not true.

Others are mixing up warranty coverage with maintenance. So far as I now, the warranty coverage has not changed.

In the end of the day, you will make your next car choice based on many factors; free maintenance is a factor, not the only factor. For those who make it the only factor and show BMW the door over this change, every day you can get in your new non-BMW, put a smile on your face and say "I showed them."

When I shop next, I will cross shop too. Each time I've done that over the past 25 years, I bought a BMW because they offer the best product for what I want. I bought them when there was no free maintenance at all. So, for me, I'm not going to let a one-year reduction in maintenance, by itself, influence my next buying decision. If I move from BMW, it will be because another brand beat BMW on the factors that matter to me. To date, that hasn't happened.

Breaks and other thigns are part of the maintenance program, not the warranty. It seems that's what people are mostly upset about. You cant claim break pads replacement under the warranty afaik.

Why would the lease numbers decline? You'd still get free maintenance for the life of your lease...literally the only thing that'll change is that you'd have to buy your own wiper blades...oh the humanity...

This is not 100% accurate. I spoke to my dealer and they said the zero maintenance still applies to my car even tho I bought it in May 2015 CPO. Getting new brakes no issues here.

Based on past experience with my 2007 E90 328i, the less I take my car to the stealership, the better it will be.

With my 2007 E90 328i, I had one brake pad change at about 35,000 miles (with plenty still left on the pad) for free. When I bought the car I purchased an additional 2 years for maintenance for $995.00 and it covered 2 oil changes, one brake fluid change and 1 set of wiper blade inserts, all of which I could have done by myself for much less.

After 6 years with my first BMW, I decided to do my own oil/oil filter changes, air/cabin filter changes, brake fluid changes, wiper blade insert changes, tire inflation, etc. Now on my 2nd BMW and will be doing the same after 4 years. I have never replaced brake pads or rotos by myself yet, but hope to in the coming years. So, this really is not a deal breaker for me.

It sounds like I will be looking for an Audi instead as my next car.

BMW is making sales and numbers records every year and yet the still increasing prices and removing the good stuff as transferable warranty and now this, it just not fair to the buyer.

FYI - I still really pissied that a honda civic for 16K comes with cameras and a 70K M3 does not, this is just bull load of stuff.
