The "real" E36 M3 a 321hp engine and the automatic option was the SMG.

It depends how both cars were equipped.

Pretty much the same: DCT, CF roof, premium sound, iDrive, 18" track wheels, extended leather, MPE.

Based purely on memory, I think I liked the E46 ZHP steering better than the E36 M3. Both provided much more feedback than the E90 or F80. And not one of these were in the same league with the old Boster I had, or the several 997 Porsches I drove.

Btw camber plates and a good alignment have done wonders for the F80’s steering feel.

The f8x throttle needs much more modulation and feathering than most cars I have driven, but if you have the patience to learn the technique, the M3 rewards you.
Agreed. It should have come with a 275/295 setup stock.

With proper throttle modulation it is reliable and rewarding even on stock tires in the rain on track.

Will never happen; BMW isn't going to give the little brother 500hp when the M4 GTS only produces "493hp"

These cars struggle putting down the power as is.

No, there is essentially no chance of that.

The X3M has been seen testing for months. It will probably debut sometime during the 2018-2019 auto show circuit. It is scheduled to start production by mid 2019 (if not sooner) and debut in the US as a 2020 model year vehicle.

A new M3 won't begin public testing until early next year at the earliest. Edit: I spoke too soon - spy pics were posted just an hour after I wrote this . But in any case, it is still far behind where the X3M is in the development cycle. Even if it does arrive on the market before the F32/F82 end production (which, as I said in my first post in this thread, would be unprecedented), it would still not come until early 2020 (as MY2021 in the US, most likely) at the earliest.

Since every damn ///M Car in the future will be going with a ZF8 transmission in the future anyway, except for the M3 and M4, I guess the only "///M" model I am looking forward to then is the 2022 BMW M440i Gran Coupe, M8 Gran Coupe aside of course.

It won't. But with Bluetooth in probably iDrive 8 you can pipe whatever sounds your heart desires!

If they can make the standard M3/4 sound like the current M4 GTS, maybe there is hope. But all this farty nonsense is ridiculous.

My bad. You're correct. I thought they were outside of Bavaria but they are not. I haven't owned an Audi in years

Either way. BMW is becoming Audi. That was my point. Not a good thing IMO.

A FWD BMW car. I thought the X1 FWD platform was a bad idea, and it was. A 1 series fwd car, yeah that's a terrible idea. And I don't care if they decide not to sell FWD variants in the states like they did with the X1. We're not idiots. We know they're fwd platforms, they drive like crap, and we can clearly see they think us dumb Americans won't even realize it if they only sell the FWD's in other markets. The current X1 is a really nice Lexus/Acura product, but a bad BMW.

Wait, I thought even the G8X M3/4 were getting the 17 speed ZF transmission?

Because extra gears for .000001 % better gas mileage really matters in a Motorsports Car...

Agreed. It should have come with a 275/295 setup stock.

on the transmission gods..

Agree on the steering.. E30 > E46 > E36...

I had a standard rack in my 91 E30 M3 and .. I put an E36 Z3 Rack in my 88 M3... that was the hot setup.

camber plates are a necessary for E9X , E82, and all F8X that have moderate to heavy track use

You see this in Audi as well as the new RS4/RS5 will be a torque converter auto vs the dct in the S3/RS3/TTRS. AMG just goes with their revised 9 speed torque converter.

I'm likely moving on to another brand for performance, if this is true. The DCT is a huge part of the driving joy I feel with the M3 vs the X5M.
nice knowing ya... but before you go... just remember that BMW was " saving a buck" by going to DCT in the first place
If you didn't know that already.. then your shock and awe at the fact they have stopped making DCTs in favor of a different cheaper option is very much appropriate.

The new M5 is an AT.... and there will be more to follow..

My point was that they have reached maximum torque allowed on current dct tolerances and to develop a new dct would cost more money than mounting the same zf as the one found in the Hellcat.

What are you rambling on and on about?

I like the title of the autoweek article.

"The BMW M badge might get a lot less exclusive."

Pretty much sums it up for me.
