Will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few months. So far lots of bad press from many outlets and not just auto related sites but also tech related sites.
Precisely.

I didn't really read this but if it's what the title says, that is insane and whoever thought of this greedy idea should be strung up. Pretty disgusting, like that other prick who said air shouldn't be free or ppl should work for free and enjoy it.

you folks remember this?

https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/31/2...lock-out-brose

"Tesla's new vehicles rolling out of the factory will include a bizarre feature designed to prevent abuse of the seat adjustment controls. The new seats will track and measure the amount of adjustments users make and will disable the controls if they detect "excessive" changes."

do we need everything reported to the mothership?

Exactly! Where do you draw the line? Soon they'll charge to use the stereo.

so does this mean that the cost of the car will be cheaper to make up for the monthly costs?
for example (using complete fake numbers) a base model 3 series that comes with heated seats and heated steering wheel come in at $40k msrp or a $400 a month lease.....im HOPING that the price of the car will drop significantly because im not paying $400 + $10 for heated steats + $18 for heated steering wheel or the same exact car i would have gotten at 400 last year

And ... everyone loses their minds? WTF!?

Are we getting upset because we are out of things to get upset about?

Also, "For the people in the back" is hilarious ... let that BMW personality shine.
On an M3, as an example, ventilated seats are $300. But let's say it costs BMW, idk, $180 for the actual hardware. I'm ok with them making money in that fashion. I buy the entire car, option it how I want, and away we go. Our deal is complete.

What they propose here is, you can buy the car. You can own the hardware for those cooled seats. But no matter how much you pay us, you'll never own the software to make them work. If you ever stop paying for it, we won't let you use them.

Let's say I own a car for 5 years, and vented seats are $5 a month. So I've still paid the $300 to equip the car, now I pay another $300 to make it work. Not ok with that. They can make a little money off me, but not a lot.

Now before you're like "they said that's not how it'll work" - that's how it already works. Every BMW has a satellite radio receiver. You, and Sirius, pay for that in the MSRP of the car, whether you want it or not.

Now you own that receiver for the life of the car, but you can't use it unless you pay for it monthly. For entertainment, this seems to be ok. We do this with the TVs in our home. But I don't need to pay Samsung to turn the damn tv on once I bought it.
not exactly a fair comparison. the vented seats cost BMW nothing to operate once they are installed. Any money you would pay as a subscription is all profit.

you pay Sirius a subscription, but they have to operate a satellite network, pay content creators, etc. Money you pay them is not all profit…they have to cover their costs.

I have two BMW's in my garage. In the event they proceed with this ill conceived bullshittery, I will have no hesitation in switching brands when the leases expire. What a bunch of greedy short sighted morons.

Something I have not seen commented on is the likely increased cost of insurance for these subscription-content vehicles. With the additional equipment needed for these services, the cost of the vehicle will be higher than it would be, had it been built without such devices. And BMW is not going to subsidize that equipment hoping that the consumer subscribes to their offerings. With a higher vehicle cost and more equipment (which increases repair costs for insurers), insurance for such a car will only be higher.

Yeah they're likely to include the cost of the equipment in the MSRP and then also charge a subscription to use it. I don't the the cost of the equipment will be priced as an upgrade but their actual cost will definitely be rolled into the MSRP. Heated seats are typically a $500 upgrade but that's with a huge markup so whatever BMW's cost is will probably be added to the MSRP.
