If they're still selling it in a few years, I can see picking one up to take over DD duties from the M2 (though i'll keep the bimmer forever.)

Even if they have an ADM they will hold their value. Used Civic Type R's are still going for well over sticker and were even before the pandemic. You can conceivably pay $10K over sticker and not lose much after driving for a year.

I've always wanted a hot hatch and would love to drive one

$10K on launch
$5K on track
$3-5K on core.

Never know. he might re-adjust when it is really released.

but Unfortunately I am getting at MSRP. Getting a launch edition.

Just go get the Mini JCW instead. Same amount of power, more restraint styling, great engine, will end up costing you less…

Are you talking about the regular one that makes 228 hp and gets wheezy at about 4,500 rpm? How is that comparable? The GR Corolla would likely lap that turd every five laps on most tracks.

The GP was a two seater with a dumb 8s automatic. Still fwd, still from the least reliable brand. Still not going to touch a GR Corolla in any performance metric.

I’m talking about the 301 hp JCW Clubman and JCW Countryman. Great, stylish, AWD, fun to drive.

IMO these are not attractive cars.

Again not saying the Corolla is a looker, but def better than the mini options.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Yeah, but the mini will swap ends really easy on a track, so there's that...

Agree, the Mini's other than the 2-door are not my cup of tea, the four doors (one of which they technically count as a crossover) look very dorky and chunky to me, they just have that bulldog look I've never liked. On top of that, they aren't very appealing compared to the Corolla. The two four-doors are almost 3,700lbs each, the engine is the B48 which is a good engine but likely lacks in character to the GR, and the GR will have a more advanced all wheel drive system and power/torque split. I do like the Mini's interior though.

Bringing up the Mini as competition to this is like saying a Bentley is a good Ferrari competitor. If Ferrari still made manuals.

I test drove the Cooper before buying my GTI and it was an absolute waste of time. Awful motor, chintzy interior and oddly poor use of space. Issigonis would be ashamed.

Why is it unfortunate that you're getting it at MSRP, when the dealer is claiming he knows what the ADM will be without knowing at least 3 important factors?

But the Yota is pretty hot, has some solid track friendly hardware and stock for stock, it could very well be the fastest around a track.
The difference is reliability. The EA888 engine is stout with cast iron block and internals but the water pumps and thermostat housings continuously fail. VAG just can't fix that. Happened to be on my MK7 Golf R and happened to pretty well everyone in our local community eventually. VAG vehicles aren't built to last IMO. This the GR Corolla will likely have tank-like reliability in comparison.

Yeah, VW's teach you to be a shade tree mechanic. Outside of the weak clutch, I'm fine with any of the repairs. But I'll take those little things over the VANOS failures, weak subframes, nerf Guibos and gummy bear shock mounts of the local brand.

Interesting not one comment about this being small and "tossable" like so many people seem to desire. The AWD system's 30:70 power split capability sounds fun. Is badge whore-ism impacting popularity here?

I'd be all over this if I didn't just buy an STI 1 year ago and spend a bunch of money to get it to 400 whp. I still like my STI better, but I have no doubt the Corolla will be a better car to drive.

What bugs me the most is reading the interview where they plan to limit production to 1 less than demand. On a Corolla? That's just so anti-Toyota and pisses me off. This isn't a Ferrari, and you're going to artificially cap production so that the perception is that they're in high demand? In the last AWD manual ICE hatch final sendoff? F*** off Toyota. Build as many as the factory can make and people will buy. I'm not going to be hunting down dealers for an allocation or enter into a bunch of bidding wars for the privilege to own a Corolla.

If I change cars again, I'll just get an RS3 from my preferred dealership down the street and pay a little more than one of these marked up Corollas with none of the hassle. And I'll end up with a much better car.

I don't understand the stereotyping based on nomenclature.

If they called the car a GR 300 instead of a Corolla, you'd be cool with it being a limited production model. But the fact that it's badged as a Corolla there should be a ton available for whoever wants them bc Corollas are cheap, readily available cars?

Furthermore, it's somehow ok for Porsche or Ferrari to artificially inflate and deflate production numbers or create a demand and have $50 to $100k markups ? Lol.

F that.

I've been on the other side of this esp with Porsche, where you need to give a handjob to everyone at a dealership to maybe get a chance to be on the waitlist to the waitlist to the allocation list.

It's a unique car, call it whatever you want, and like every unique car, it'll be a little bit of a hassle to get one. But I agree that if it becomes a huge PITA to purchase, buyers will have to balance how much crap they'll put up with until they just walk away. Personally, I spent 20 minutes calling some dealers, and got on a list for a car at MSRP. Wasn't a big deal at all.
