I agree with you 100% however, where i dissagree is your comment about policing who protests. (to some extent) if they policed who was there, they would have less then half as many people showing up and protesting. The numbers make an impact, even if part of that group saw people standing around and were curious and walked in not knowing what was going on. Power in numbers. But with that comes stupidity, so it's sort of a catch-22.

Though obviously the cop acted within his legal bounds in this case, the many publicized instances of police acting morally questionable is doing a lot of harm. They need to regain much of their lost respect, and I'm not sure this is possible given the availability of cell phone video

Though as someone posted, don't feel bad at all knowing he won't be taking up the state's resources. Just don't shoot him in front of the camera.

Police image is bad right now because of many things including readily available video, but video isn't the real problem. Its the fact that most of society believes that bad things don't happen as often as they do, and they don't understand that violence can only be dealt with by people who are ready to be more violent still.

The public also doesn't understand that the kind of personality required to do that may be less articulate or outwardly compassionate than your average office worker. People fear what they don't understand. Most people have never even been in a fight. So violence scares them, especially since the reality is so much different than television and the movies.

Now, throw video into the mix and all the ugly reality comes out for people to see from the comfort of their own homes. There's so much that goes into this equation, I could literally write a daily blog about it. I'll save you the boredom.

I tell my guys that if they're doing it right, video is your friend in court and is fun to watch later. The problem is that the less than spectacular members of our field stand out, while the men and women doing it properly are never recognized.

Its just like the cruise ship industry, fuck-ups stand out while all the rest go unnoticed. Worse, because we are held to a higher standard, anything we do wrong is scrutinized to the Nth degree.

Cops need to adjust to the video world, and we are notoriously slow at adapting. Video is here to stay and soon nothing anyone does will escape notice. These guys made hard decisions, and the uninformed here that are criticizing are clearly ignorant. All we can do is try and educate them.
